Wildwood Park
About Wildwood Park
Park History
Established in 1995 and later transferred to the Chico Area Recreation and Park District (CARD) in 2011, Wildwood Park has grown into one of the area's most popular hangout spots.
In a meaningful transition, the park was recently renamed from Wildwood Park to Veterans Memorial Park on November 11, 2023. This change came after the Veterans of Chico successfully petitioned for the renaming, which CARD's Board of Directors unanimously supported - a beautiful way to honor Chico's veterans.
Gateway to Nature
Sitting pretty as a gateway to the breathtaking Upper Bidwell Park, this green space offers the perfect jumping-off point for nature explorations. Its location couldn't be more ideal for anyone looking to venture into the surrounding natural beauty.
Take a stroll along the pleasant walking paths and trails - ideal for a morning exercise routine, a moment of quiet reflection, or just unwinding after a hectic workday. You'll enjoy lovely views of Upper Park while getting your steps in.
Recreational Facilities
The park is thoughtfully laid out with facilities that appeal to everyone in the family. Parents will appreciate the smart design that offers good sight lines to keep an eye on kids as they play.
The park's pump track comes in two varieties: a beginner-friendly option and an intermediate-to-advanced track for those looking for more challenge. It's a great spot for cyclists of different skill levels.
Sports fans can make good use of the baseball fields and open grassy spaces that work perfectly for impromptu soccer games or tossing a frisbee. There are also a few disc golf baskets available for practice throws - though keep in mind it's not a complete course.
Playground Areas
Kids have not one but two separate playground areas to explore - one sized just right for the older crowd and another designed with the little ones in mind. Both feature fun climbing structures, slides, and play equipment that keeps children entertained for hours.
The littlest visitors often make a beeline for the large sandbox area, where imagination runs wild. These play spaces are well-kept and offer some welcome shade, making them comfortable retreats even on warmer California days.
Picnic and Gathering Facilities
Looking for a spot to host your next get-together? The park's covered picnic area is a haven, featuring around 27 tables and built-in BBQ grills. It's a great backdrop for birthday celebrations, family reunions, or casual community meetups.
Matured trees scatter shade within the grounds, while spacious grassy areas provide plenty of room for spreading out picnic blankets or accommodating larger groups. Whether you're planning a small lunch or reserving space for a larger gathering, the park can accommodate your needs.
Amenities and Accessibility
Clean, well-maintained restrooms are conveniently located near the playground areas. They're regularly serviced - which is helpful when you're spending the day outdoors.
One unique feature you might not expect is the park's micro amphitheater or stage area. It's a charming spot for informal performances or just practicing your public speaking skills.
Getting to the park is a breeze, thanks to paved roads, plenty of parking, and public transportation options. The CARD staff maintains the grounds well, providing a clean, safe environment for visitors.
Dog-Friendly Environment
Four-legged family members are welcome too! The park is dog-friendly (just keep them leashed). You'll come across waste bag stations within the grounds, making it easy to clean up after your pooch while enjoying your time outdoors together.
