Situated in the heart of Downey, Independence Park spans a generous 10.1 acres, as the community's go-to spot for recreation and social gatherings. This versatile green space has a little something for everyone, whether you're an athlete, a family with kids, or just someone looking for a peaceful outdoor retreat.

The park features lush green spaces, mature trees providing welcome shade, and paths that wind through the grounds. It's well-suited for your morning jog, an afternoon walk, or simply finding a quiet spot to reconnect with nature. One of the nicest things about Independence Park? It rarely feels overcrowded, giving you room to breathe and enjoy your surroundings at your own pace.

Skate Park

Skaters, rejoice! The Meredith H. Perkins Skate Park is a standout feature here - a substantial 10,000 square foot concrete playground designed by the pros at PurkissRose back in 2002. Its centerpiece is a 5.5-foot deep full capsule that draws comparisons to Whittier's design, though locals will tell you it's wider and lacks the extensions.

The skate park is a treasure trove of features including a bank/wedge ramp, bowl/pool, flat rail, funbox, half pipe, Hubba, kicker/launch, grind box/ledge, mini ramp, pyramid, quarter pipe, and a stair set. City staff supervise during designated hours, and the facility consistently earns thumbs-up from skaters who appreciate its thoughtful design and upkeep.

Sports Facilities

For the sportier types, Independence Park doesn't disappoint. The Independence Park Tennis Center offers eight lighted courts that you can reserve ahead of time. Tennis players particularly appreciate that these courts are well-maintained and you can usually find an open court without much waiting.

In an exciting recent development, previously unused sections of the park have been transformed into three new futsal courts, where ten players (five per team) can enjoy this fast-paced soccer variant. If you're more into traditional soccer or softball, you'll come across caged soccer courts and softball fields that are well-suited for impromptu games with friends.

The park has also jumped on the pickleball bandwagon, adding courts for this increasingly popular sport that appeals to players of all ages and skill levels.

Amenities for Families

If you're bringing kids, Independence Park offers dedicated play areas where children can play while you relax nearby. The family-friendly atmosphere makes this a popular weekend destination for locals.

You'll come across plenty of picnic tables scattered across the grounds, with some corner spots offering a bit more privacy if you're planning a family gathering. And no need to leave your furry family members at home - the park is dog-friendly, so your four-legged companions can enjoy the fresh air too.

The park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM-9PM Monday through Friday, and 7AM-7PM on weekends.
