Park Overview
Independence Park is a 10.1-acre recreational space that serves as a hub for community activities and sports. Established in the heart of Downey, this park offers a diverse range of facilities catering to various interests and age groups.
The park features well-maintained green spaces and winding paths, providing an ideal environment for walking, jogging, and enjoying nature. Its expansive grounds make it suitable for both leisurely strolls and more vigorous exercise routines.
Skate Park
One of the park's notable features is the Meredith H. Perkins Skate Park, a 10,000 square foot concrete facility designed by PurkissRose and opened in 2002. This skate park includes a 5.5-foot deep full capsule, similar to the design found in Whittier but wider and without extensions.
Skaters can enjoy various elements such as a bank/wedge ramp, bowl/pool, flat rail, funbox, half pipe, Hubba, kicker/launch, grind box/ledge, mini ramp, pyramid, quarter pipe, and stair set. The skate park is supervised by city staff during specific hours.
Sports Facilities
The park boasts multiple sports facilities, including tennis courts and baseball fields. The Independence Park Tennis Center offers eight reservable lighted courts, with specific hours for the tennis center and courts.
In recent developments, previously unused portions of Independence Park now house three new futsal courts, allowing two teams of five players each to engage in this fast-paced variant of soccer.
Amenities for Families
For families with children, Independence Park provides play areas, ensuring that younger visitors have a dedicated space for recreation. The park's amenities are complemented by on-site restroom facilities, enhancing visitor comfort during their stay.
The park is open to the public daily from 7AM-9PM Monday through Friday, and 7AM-7PM on weekends.
