About Wilderness Park

Natural Features

Located in Downey, California, Wilderness Park spreads across 22 acres of refreshing greenspace. The park's crown jewels are its two lakes where you can cast a line and try your luck at fishing. If you're an angler at heart, you'll appreciate the variety of fish swimming below the surface, including catfish and rainbow trout - the latter occasionally stocked to keep things interesting.

The park is dotted with tall trees and scenic landscapes that create a fantastic escape from urban life. While wandering around, keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife - ducks and geese gliding across the water, turtles sunbathing on rocks, and if you're lucky, rabbits and other small critters scurrying through the underbrush.

Places to Play

Need to burn off some energy? Wilderness Park offers several options. Kids between 2-12 can enjoy the large playground complete with swings and climbing equipment.

If you're looking to get some steps in, the walking and jogging paths meander through the natural areas, offering a pleasant route for exercise. A full loop clocks in at about three-quarters of a mile, so four laps will give you a solid three-mile workout. For those wanting to venture further, the park connects to the San Gabriel River bike trail, extending your journey on two wheels or two feet.

Many visitors bring their fishing gear to enjoy some quiet time by the lakes, practicing catch-and-release fishing at both water features.

Picnic Spots

Wilderness Park shines as a gathering spot for all sorts of get-togethers. Several covered picnic areas are available for family reunions, birthday celebrations, or just casual hangouts. Planning something bigger? You can reserve certain areas through Downey's Parks and Recreation Department.

Throughout the park, you'll come across picnic tables and barbecue grills available on a first-come basis. Just note that weekends tend to draw bigger crowds, so you might want to arrive early to snag your preferred spot.

Amenities

You'll discover multiple restroom facilities conveniently located throughout the park, including near the playground and along the walking paths. Need to refill your water bottle? Look for the filling stations scattered around the grounds.

Feel free to bring your four-legged friend along - the park is dog-friendly, but your pup needs to stay leashed at all times. You'll appreciate the dog waste stations along the trails that make clean-up a breeze.

Parking Details

Heading over on a weekend or holiday? If you're not a Downey resident, there's a $5 weekend parking fee collected through automated meters in both the North and South lots (implemented July 1, 2023). The good news is that parking remains free for everyone on weekdays.

If you live in Downey, you can get yourself a free yearly parking permit from the Parks and Recreation Department. Those with valid handicap placards park for free regardless of where they live.

During busy times, especially weekends, parking spaces fill up quickly. If you're planning an event or gathering, arriving early is your best bet for finding a spot.
