About the Location
Urban Oasis
Hayward Community Gardens is a 5.3-acre urban garden located in the Jackson Triangle neighborhood of Hayward, California. Established in 2019, this community resource is operated and maintained by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD) on land leased from PG&E.
Garden Plots
The first phase of development included over 70 garden plots, with the potential to expand to 210 plots upon full implementation of the community garden master plan. These plots range in size from 10' x 10' to 20' x 20' and are available for rent to local residents on a two-year basis for approximately $300 per year.
The garden aims to promote community interest in gardening, provide recreational and socializing opportunities, and enable local residents to supplement their diets with home-grown produce. Water is provided free of charge to plot renters, making it particularly valuable for community members interested in growing their own vegetables and fruits.
Community Features
In addition to individual garden plots, the site features communal areas designed to foster community engagement. These include 2-3 picnic tables and barbecue areas, some covered by a large kiwi tree that provides pleasant shade.
Visitors will find an outdoor classroom for garden education and demonstrations, and a natural exploration area for children. The garden also incorporates sustainable practices, such as a composting area and water conservation measures.
Visitor Information
While the individual plots are tended by their renters who have exclusive rights to the crops they grow, visitors are welcome to walk through the gardens to enjoy the diverse plantings and beautiful flowers. The gardens provide a pleasant environment for short walks and appreciation of urban agriculture.
Two portable restrooms are available on-site, including one larger accessible unit that can accommodate wheelchairs. Please note that dogs are not permitted in the gardens to maintain the organic integrity of the growing areas.
Community Impact
Hayward Community Gardens is an important community asset, particularly in an area with limited access to fresh produce and green spaces. It provides a valuable opportunity for urban dwellers to engage in subsistence gardening, learn about resource conservation and urban gardening techniques, and connect with fellow community members in a safe, enjoyable environment.
The gardens have become especially popular with various cultural communities, including African immigrants and Asian residents who value growing their own culturally significant vegetables and fruits.
