About the Location
The Story Behind the Park
Dating back to the mid-1980s, this 20-acre green space has been the go-to gathering spot for west Lancaster residents for decades. Named after Rawley Bruce Duntley - affectionately known as the "Barbecue King" in the Antelope Valley community - the park honors a man who was famous for his generosity and dedication to neighbors.
Where to Find It
You'll come across Rawley Duntley Park conveniently nestled in west Lancaster, directly across from Antelope Valley College and a stone's throw from the Lancaster Sheriff's Office. This central spot makes it easily accessible whether you're a local resident or a student looking for some fresh air between classes.
During daylight hours, the park offers a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere - a little oasis in the midst of the city where you can unwind and let the kids burn off some energy. The nearby college and sheriff's office contribute to a generally safe atmosphere.
Get Your Game On
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the two lighted baseball fields that local teams use year-round for practices and games. These fields thoughtfully include outfield screens to keep stray balls from wandering into the neighboring homes.
If basketball is more your speed, the park features two recently renovated basketball courts that are well-maintained and ready for your next pickup game.
Beyond the formal courts and fields, the open grassy areas give you plenty of room for impromptu activities - whether you're flying kites, tossing a frisbee, or giving your drone its first test flight.
Family-Friendly Features
The recently upgraded playground area is a highlight for families with little ones. It's thoughtfully designed with separate sections for toddlers (ages 2-5) and older children, featuring an array of climbing structures, slides, and swings to keep kids entertained.
Notable features include: shade coverings to keep the equipment cool on hot days, rubber surfacing instead of wood chips, and accessibility features including ramps and braille. Both standard swings and buddy swings ensure children of all abilities can join in the fun.
Hungry after all that play? The park offers nine barbecues and numerous stone picnic tables scattered throughout. For bigger gatherings, two gazebos with group picnic shelters can be reserved - good options for birthday parties or family reunions.
The Natural Setting
Matured trees create welcome patches of shade across the well-kept lawns, making it possible to find a comfortable spot even during the warmer months. These trees aren't just practical - they add to the park's natural charm and create a more relaxing environment.
Dog owners will appreciate the pet waste stations placed across the grounds, making it easy to clean up after your four-legged friends during your walks.
Clean restroom facilities are available during park hours, however the maintenance quality can sometimes be hit or miss. The good news is they do include ADA-accessible options with sinks.
What's New in 2024
As of March 2024, Rawley Duntley Park is getting a significant facelift. The renovation project kicked off with a groundbreaking ceremony on March 11th and aims to breathe new life into this community space.
The upgrades include a brand-new playground and freshly renovated basketball courts. Just note that until approximately June 2024, parts of the park - including the playground and some parking areas - will be temporarily closed during construction.
What Locals Love
Many locals have been visiting Rawley Duntley Park for years, with some parents who played here as children now bringing their own kids.
The park works well for small gatherings and family outings, but might feel a bit cozy for larger events. The current improvements will help maintain the space for continued community use.
