About the Location
History and Dedication
Originally Lancaster City Park, this green space was renamed in 2016 to honor Sergeant Steve Owen, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officer who tragically lost his life while serving the community that year.
Location and Setting
Spanning 63 acres in the heart of Lancaster, this park sits conveniently next to Highway 14 between Avenues K and L. It's easily accessible, whether you're a local or just passing through.
The sprawling, tree-dotted grounds create a peaceful retreat that hosts everything from national softball tournaments to those classic family reunions where Uncle Bob inevitably mans the grill. The abundant shade trees form a welcome green sanctuary within Lancaster's urban landscape, making even mid-summer strolls surprisingly pleasant.
Facilities
The Stanley Kleiner Activity Center stands as the park's social hub. Named after Lancaster's first mayor and built back in the mid-80s, this versatile space comes equipped with a full kitchen, game room, and auditorium - ideal for community gatherings where memories are made.
You'll discover clean, well-maintained restrooms across the park, open during regular hours (6AM to 10PM daily).
Picnic areas are scattered within the grounds, with plenty of tables and several covered shelters for those larger get-togethers. Fancy a cookout? BBQ grills are ready and waiting for your burgers and hot dogs.
Sports and Recreation
The tennis courts here are well-maintained, with some locals considering them among the better public courts in LA County. They're well-lit until 10PM, so your evening match can go into tiebreak without issue.
The park doesn't stop at tennis, offering basketball courts, volleyball courts, and softball fields that regularly host competitive play. If you're looking to perfect your swing, the batting cages provide a great place to practice before the big game.
Playground
Kids will make a beeline for the large, updated playground that caters to the young and young-at-heart. The play area features eight swings (including two baby swings and four inclusive plastic ones), multiple slides, climbing structures, and even interactive musical elements that might awaken your child's inner Mozart.
A turf hill and various climbing challenges add to the fun factor, however on scorching summer days, you might wish for a bit more shade coverage.
Special Events
Year-round, the park transforms for various community celebrations. Monday Nite Bites brings food trucks with tasty offerings, while spring welcomes Easter egg hunters of all ages. Dog lovers shouldn't miss the annual Bark in the Park event, where four-legged friends become the center of attention with special vendors and activities.
Dog-Friendly Features
Speaking of dogs, the park welcomes your furry companions, particularly along the outer walking paths where you'll regularly spot locals and their pets getting their steps in. Waste bag stations are available, but it's always smart to bring your own supply just in case.
The generous open spaces allow plenty of room for your leashed dog to explore while you enjoy the park's tranquil atmosphere.
