Livingston Drive Park
About Livingston Drive Park
A Neighborhood Space
Situated in Long Beach's Belmont Shore neighborhood, Livingston Drive Park is the kind of place that makes you appreciate small spaces with big character. At just 1.5 acres, this cozy green retreat sits quietly along Livingston Drive between Park and Argonne Avenues, offering a more intimate vibe than its larger counterparts nearby.
From Tracks to Play Space
Interestingly, this little park has quite the backstory. It was once part of the Pacific Electric Railway right-of-way before the city acquired it in 1963. Initially, they had plans to widen the street (can you imagine?), but those were scrapped in 1970. That's when the local residents stepped in with a better idea.
Fast forward to 1990, and you've got neighbors banding together, fundraising, and matching the city's contribution to build a playground specifically designed for the preschool crowd (3-5 years old). Talk about community spirit!
Neighbors Making It Happen
The local love didn't stop there. In 2007, the Tot Lot Committee (TLC) - which has to be one of the sweetest committee names ever - rallied again to raise funds for much-needed improvements. Their efforts paid off beautifully, replacing what was then the oldest playground equipment in the city and expanding the play area.
By January 2009, the park boasted a newly renovated playground with separate sections for toddlers (2-3 years) and school-aged children (5-12 years). There's something heartwarming about seeing grandparents now bringing their grandkids to the same spot where they once brought their children years ago.
What You'll Find
If you're looking for a quiet place to let the kids burn off some energy, this park hits the spot. The playground sits on a sand surface - a feature many parents appreciate since it seems to keep children entertained for ages (who doesn't love digging in sand?).
One of the nicest aspects is the enclosed design that gives you peace of mind while the little ones play. Its modest size and calmer atmosphere make it perfect when you're in the mood for a more laid-back outdoor experience without the crowds.
For Belmont Shore residents, it's a convenient breath of fresh air just a block away from the hustle and bustle of Second Street. Note that street parking can be limited in this residential area - but that's part of what keeps this park feeling like a neighborhood secret rather than a tourist destination.
