About the Location
A Cozy Green Retreat
Tucked away at the intersection of McCarthy Vista and Crescent Heights Boulevard, Carthay Circle Park offers a breath of fresh air in the bustling Carthay Circle neighborhood of Los Angeles. It's not one of those sprawling city parks, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm as a verdant haven for locals and passersby alike.
The park runs on a pretty accommodating schedule - open daily from 6AM to 9:30PM - so whether you're an early bird looking to enjoy some morning tranquility or someone seeking an evening stroll after dinner, this little green space has you covered. The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks keeps the grounds well-maintained year-round.
The Famous Miner
What really gives this park its character is the "The Pioneer" statue crafted by Henry Lion. Standing proudly at about seven feet tall and weighing in at 512 pounds, this bronze figure - affectionately known as "Dan the Miner" - has become something of a neighborhood celebrity.
There's actually quite a story behind this statue. Originally installed on September 25, 1924, as part of a fountain display, "Dan" has seen his fair share of drama. In 2009, during a time when copper prices were soaring, the statue was stolen - a neighborhood tragedy! Thankfully, it was recovered, lovingly restored, and returned to its rightful place in 2010, where it continues to watch over the park today.
A Piece of LA History
The park isn't just a pretty spot to sit - it's woven into the fabric of historic Carthay Circle, a neighborhood that stands out for its thoughtful urban planning. Back when the area was developed, incorporating green spaces like this park wasn't an afterthought but an essential part of creating a livable community. Walking through the park today, you're experiencing a small but significant piece of Los Angeles urban design history.
