About the Location
A Walk Through History
Set in Los Angeles, California, LA High Memorial Park is a cozy one-hectare green space that packs a lot of history into its modest footprint. You'll discover it right across from Los Angeles High School, tucked into the southeastern corner of Midtown's Brookside neighborhood. While there's no staff on site, the park's story speaks volumes.
It all began in 1922 when Los Angeles High School students pooled their resources to purchase land honoring twenty of their peers who never returned from World War I. By 1923, students and alumni had acquired an adjacent parcel, expanding this living memorial.
What Makes It Special
The Tudor-style Memorial Branch Library stands as a notable feature of the park. Designed by Austin & Ashley architects and opened in April 1930, this charming building houses some truly breathtaking stained glass windows created by the local Judson Art Studio from Garvanza.
Take a moment to appreciate the magnificent mature trees that have stood watch since the park's dedication. These diverse species create a peaceful canopy of shade that transforms the space into a natural sanctuary amid the urban landscape.
Families with kids gravitate toward the western section, where you'll come across a substantial jungle gym that was updated in 2013. Safety improvements make this a trusted spot for neighborhood parents looking to let their little ones burn off some energy.
Community Vibes
On any given day, you'll see a cross-section of LA life here - people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to play, read, picnic, or simply enjoy some fresh air. The park naturally draws people together.
The broad, inviting lawn has become home to community fitness programs, including WalkGoodLA's yoga sessions and occasional boxing classes. The open grassy area perfectly accommodates these activities while still leaving plenty of room for casual lounging and social gatherings.
What To Know Before You Go
While you won't find permanent picnic tables, the well-kept lawn makes a perfect spot for spreading out a blanket and enjoying an outdoor meal. The park is typically clean and offers a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere considering its urban setting.
Need a bathroom? The Memorial Branch Library is accessible during its operating hours. The library itself is worth exploring - with its staff and an ambiance reminiscent of LA Central Library downtown on a smaller scale.
Four-Legged Friends Welcome
Dog owners have made this park part of their regular rotation, and it's easy to see why. The open spaces give pets room to stretch their legs (though keep them on leash), making it a favorite spot for the neighborhood's canine community and their humans.
