About the Location
Historic Roots
Back in 1903, Dr. Bushrod Washington James donated the land that would become this cherished green space, setting the stage for what is now the heart of the Bushrod neighborhood.
At 10.12 acres, Bushrod Park is one of North Oakland's largest parks and has been a community gathering place for generations. There's something special about a place that has witnessed over a century of Oakland life.
Location and Layout
The park sits nestled between Shattuck Avenue and Racine Street to the east and west, with 61st Street and 59th Street marking its northern and southern boundaries.
With its sprawling grassy fields and mature shade trees, Bushrod offers plenty of room to spread out a blanket on sunny California days. The layout offers a good mix of open space and recreational areas.
Sports Legacy
If these grounds could talk, they'd tell some impressive sports stories. Baseball legend Rickey Henderson (all-time leader in runs scored and stolen bases) once played here as a youngster, as did greats like Frank Robinson, Billy Martin, and Vada Pinson.
Even the Oakland Raiders saw the potential in this community space, using it as their practice field back in the 1960s.
The tennis courts carry on this legacy of athletic excellence, named after tennis pioneer Don Budge, who developed his game right here as a youth.
Facilities
Bushrod Park balances indoor and outdoor amenities nicely. The recreation center represents a community anchor, hosting various programs including after-school activities for neighborhood kids.
Step outside and you'll find spacious fields, courts, and play areas. There's a charming playground that local families appreciate, good bike access for those on two wheels, and well-maintained grounds throughout.
Sports and Recreation
Athletes of all levels have options here. The baseball fields host little league games where future stars take their swings. Basketball courts welcome both organized camps and spontaneous pickup games among friends.
The tennis courts have gotten a modern update with pickleball lines, and pickleball has really taken off at Bushrod. You can find dedicated groups gathering regularly - drop by Friday mornings from 10-1 for open play, or Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:30 PM for social games and new connections.
Dog-Friendly Space
Though not officially designated as a dog park, Bushrod has become a favorite spot for locals to bring their four-legged friends. The open fields provide plenty of space for dogs to chase balls and frisbees.
Just remember to clean up after your pup and be mindful of organized activities, especially when kids are playing sports.
Community Hub
Bushrod Park is a place where many aspects of Oakland life unfold - families picnic, athletes train, and neighbors connect under the California sky.
The Bushrod Community Garden adds another dimension to this nearby park, creating opportunities for people of all ages to engage with nature and each other.
From its historical beginnings to today's pickup games and pickleball matches, Bushrod Park remains an important part of Oakland's recreational landscape.
