About the Location
A Green Oasis in West Oakland
Tucked away at the corner of 17th Street and West Street in West Oakland, Marston Campbell Park is a pleasant 3.1-acre neighborhood green space popular with local residents. Right next to Lafayette Elementary School, this little urban sanctuary offers a breath of fresh air in the concrete landscape.
What You'll Find There
The first thing you'll notice is the generous open field that seems to invite impromptu soccer games and family picnics. No matter if you're tossing a frisbee, spreading out a blanket for lunch, or just looking for a patch of grass to stretch out on, there's plenty of room for everyone.
If you've got kids in tow, head to the playground with play structures where the little ones can climb, slide, and burn off some energy. There's also a sand area for creative play, but it's worth keeping an eye out for occasional bee visitors who sometimes make an appearance.
One of the park's quiet retreats is its youth-led community garden - a grassroots effort that adds both beauty and purpose to the space.
On hot days, you'll appreciate the shade trees scattered around the park. Nothing beats finding a cool spot under the leafy canopy when the California sun is doing its thing.
Community Vibes
The park hosts various community gatherings, with the Black Eyed Pea Festival being one of the events that brings neighbors together.
Timing your visit can make a difference in your experience - the park tends to buzz with energy during school hours thanks to the neighboring elementary school, but offers a more peaceful atmosphere when school's out.
A Bit of History
Completed in 1977, the park honors Marston Campbell (1867-1933), an Oakland-born civil engineer who made his mark on the city after spending two decades working in Hawaii. Campbell served as the first president of the East Bay Municipal Utility District and held several positions in Oakland's city government.
Its convenient location just off Interstate 980 makes it easily accessible, while its connection to Lafayette Elementary School ensures it is a natural extension of the schoolyard for students. It's a practical, unpretentious space that local residents regularly use.
