About the Location

Lake and Recreation

Located in the Berkeley Hills of northeastern Oakland, Temescal Regional Recreation Area spans 48 acres of natural beauty. At its heart lies Lake Temescal, a charming reservoir created back in 1869 when Temescal Creek was dammed to provide drinking water for the East Bay area.

Today, this tranquil lake is what draws most people to the park. During the warmer months, you can enjoy swimming in designated areas, try your luck fishing, or spend some time boating on the calm waters. There's a lovely beach area where you can spread out a blanket, soak up some sun, or enjoy a leisurely picnic. If fishing is your thing, you'll be pleased to know the lake is well-stocked with trout, bass, sunfish, and catfish - just remember to bring your fishing license.

History and Trails

When the park opened to the public in 1936, it made history as one of the first three parks established by the East Bay Regional Park District. Today, gentle trails encircle the lake, including a paved 0.5 mile accessible trail along the eastern shore that makes for a pleasant stroll you can complete in under 40 minutes.

As you explore, you'll notice grassy areas dotted with mature oak and willow trees, offering peaceful views of the Oakland hills. The historic beach house built in 1940 stands as a charming reminder of the park's past. This picturesque building overlooks the lake and is available to rent for events, making it a sought-after spot for weddings and celebrations.

Visitor Information

The park tends to get quite busy, especially on summer weekends when the swim area is open. Just know that in recent years, toxic algae blooms have occasionally forced officials to close the lake for swimming. There's a $5 parking fee, but you can also find street parking along Broadway if you prefer.

It's worth noting that the park district actively monitors water quality and works to improve conditions. Despite being situated near the intersection of Highways 24 and 13, once you're inside the park, you can find it offers a surprisingly peaceful retreat from city life.

Amenities and Activities

If you're visiting with kids, you'll appreciate the two playgrounds - conveniently located at each entrance. The park is ideal for family outings with numerous picnic areas featuring tables and BBQ grills scattered throughout. Planning something bigger? The larger areas can be reserved for groups and events.

Clean restroom facilities are well-positioned near the playgrounds, beach area, and at either end of the lake. And yes, you can bring your four-legged friends - the park is dog-friendly, but all dogs must stay on leash to protect the local wildlife and ensure everyone's enjoyment.

Environmental Significance

Beyond recreation, the park helps with flood control and provides habitat for wildlife in the Oakland hills. Grab your binoculars for some casual bird watching - you might spot ducks, geese, and sometimes even pelicans gliding over the water. Located within the metropolitan area, it's a convenient spot to enjoy nature without traveling far from the city.
