About the Location

Waterfront Escape

Located next to Oakland's shoreline, Union Point Park is a nine-acre waterfront retreat that sits near Coast Guard Island, just south of the Embarcadero area. Opened in 2005, this space has quite the transformation story - from contaminated industrial site to vibrant public park.

The park offers beautiful views of the water and Oakland skyline, providing a quiet spot to clear your head and soak in some natural scenery. With a marina and boat harbor right next door, there's always that lovely maritime atmosphere that reminds you you're at the edge of the Bay.

From Industrial to Idyllic

What we find fascinating about Union Point Park is how it embraces rather than erases its industrial past. The overlook hill functions as both a creative environmental solution and a park centerpiece.

Instead of hauling away contaminated soil (expensive and wasteful), designers gathered it into a mound, capped it safely, and turned a problem into an asset. This 20-foot landscaped hill provides excellent panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay and Oakland skyline. If you visit after dark, you might even catch the twinkling San Francisco skyline across the water.

Places to Play and Pause

The park balances open spaces with recreational areas. You'll discover expansive lawns and gardens connected by paved pathways that actually link up with the larger Bay Trail system - making this an excellent pit stop if you're cycling toward Alameda.

A series of hills and mounds along the street side form what's called a "rippled edge" that creates a sense of enclosure and buffers the park from nearby industrial zones.

Noteworthy Features

As you explore, you'll notice some distinctive landmarks that give the park character. There's a spiral pyramid monument flying the American flag, plus a meaningful statue commemorating African Americans - both adding cultural depth to your visit.

The park offers several picnic areas and open spaces great for unwinding or casual get-togethers. There are restroom facilities available, but they aren't always in the best condition.

The Reality Check

It's worth knowing that Union Point Park has weathered some maintenance issues in recent years. The playground equipment that once was a highlight has experienced damage and might not be fully functional.

The overall condition tends to vary, with trash sometimes accumulating and general upkeep lacking at times. While these issues can impact your experience, the waterfront access and open space still make it a worthwhile destination.

Community Heart

For residents of nearby Fruitvale and San Antonio neighborhoods, this park represents a crucial public space, bringing waterfront access to an area of Oakland that historically had few such amenities.

The park was created through community collaboration - various local groups, agencies, and individuals worked together on its development, incorporating neighborhood needs and vision. You'll notice the thoughtful layout and creative design elements that many early visitors still appreciate today.

Part of Something Bigger

Union Point Park isn't just a standalone space - it's one piece in a larger effort to create interconnected parks, walking paths, and bike trails around the San Francisco Bay. This broader initiative aims to improve public access to the waterfront while promoting environmental stewardship throughout the Bay Area.
