History and Renovation

Located in Oakland's Seminary District, Rainbow Recreation Center has served neighborhood activities since the 1970s. After decades of service, the center got a much-needed facelift, wrapping up a major renovation and expansion in 2019. What makes this project special? The community had a real voice in the process. Multiple neighborhood meetings ensured that when the dust settled, the revamped center truly reflected what locals wanted and needed.

Facility Features

Spread across a cozy 1.85-acre park, the center now boasts an impressive 14,585 square feet of space - combining the original 9,985 square foot building with a 4,600 square foot modern addition.

Step inside and you can find a gymnasium for basketball, a fully equipped kitchen and pantry, a large multipurpose room for community gatherings, a workout room, a daycare facility, and a computer lab for those needing tech access. The center has earned LEED Silver certification for its environmental design.

Outdoor Amenities

The outdoor space includes various amenities. You can challenge friends on the basketball courts, watch kids explore the playground, or let the little ones toddle around the tot lot designed just for them. Need a moment of calm? There are plenty of green spaces to relax and recharge.

One clever update was transforming rarely-used tennis courts into a turf soccer field - a change that better serves what the community actually wanted. Garden enthusiasts will appreciate the edible educational garden, while fitness buffs can take advantage of the outdoor exercise area for fresh-air workouts.
