About the Location
Historic Significance
Situated on a gently sloping hillside, the park occupies an area that was once part of Rancho San Antonio during the Mexican era of California. Originally known as Independence Square in the early development of Oakland, it was renamed San Antonio Park sometime after 1912.
The park has played a significant role in the history of the Chicano Movement. In 1970, it was the site of a notable Chicano Moratorium rally against the Vietnam War. Today, San Antonio Park continues to serve as a community space where cultures intersect and people of all ages come together.
