Plaza Park
About Plaza Park
Historic Centerpiece
Found in the heart of downtown Oxnard, California, Plaza Park is the city's vibrant pulse and community gathering spot. This 2-acre green space sits at the corner of Fifth and C Streets, offering a break from the surrounding urban landscape.
Iconic Pagoda
The park's main feature is its octagonal pagoda standing in the center. Built in 1910, this structure initially housed a pump for park irrigation before being transformed into a bandstand in 1911.
Over the years, the pagoda has evolved into a symbol of the park itself. It continues to host concerts and patriotic celebrations, making it one of California's few remaining band pavilions. It earned County historic landmark status in 1971.
Park Layout
Four paths cut through the park from each bordering street, all meeting at the central pagoda like spokes on a wheel. Take a leisurely stroll along these walkways, where you'll come across metal benches well-suited for people-watching beneath the shade of towering, mature trees.
The generous green lawns provide plenty of room to spread out a blanket for picnics or simply lounging around. While you won't find designated picnic tables or BBQ pits here, the grass provides space for picnics.
Community Events
During the year, Plaza Park comes alive with festivals that showcase Oxnard's community spirit. The Oxnard Salsa Festival brings spicy flavors and dancing, while the Multicultural Festival celebrates the city's diverse heritage. Runners gather here for the Santa to the Sea race, which kicks off its quarter and half marathon events from this very spot.
If you're a foodie, don't miss the First Thursday Food truck nights, where local vendors serve up delicious treats. The park occasionally hosts themed markets too - past events have included Hello Kitty-themed gatherings complete with face painting.
Farmers Market
The Thursday Farmers Market is a popular regular event at the park. Here you can find organic vegetables, fruits, and prepared foods. Many locals make this a weekly tradition.
On lucky days, you might even catch some live music while you shop, adding an extra layer of local flavor to the experience.
Holiday Attraction
Come holiday season, Plaza Park becomes home to a truly impressive sight: a Christmas tree towering over 110 feet tall when fully decorated. As the tallest Christmas tree in Ventura County, it transforms the park into a magical winter wonderland and draws visitors from all around the region.
Memorial Site
A thoughtful military memorial stands in the park, creating a space for reflection and remembrance. Occasionally, live music events honor veterans, paying tribute to their service in this peaceful setting.
Surrounding Area
The park doesn't exist in isolation - it's surrounded by restaurants, shops, and the Plaza Stadium Cinemas, making it a natural hub connecting downtown Oxnard's cultural and commercial offerings. With a Starbucks just across the street, you can grab a coffee before settling on a bench to watch the world go by.
Note that there are no public restrooms in the park itself, but nearby businesses may offer facilities to customers.
