About the Location

All Aboard the Historic Miniature Railroad

Positioned in Riverside's Hunter Industrial Park neighborhood, Hunter Hobby Park spans a generous 32 acres of green escape from the urban landscape. The park's story goes back to the 1950s when local industrialist Joe Hunter dreamed up something special - a miniature steam engine experience that would delight generations to come.

What makes this park unique is its impressive miniature railroad system. With about 10,000 feet of track weaving within the grounds, these tiny trains aren't just for show. They're lovingly operated and maintained by the Riverside Live Steamers (RLS), a passionate group of railroad enthusiasts who keep this bit of history chugging along.

If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind experience, come by on the second and fourth Sundays of each month from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM when you can hop aboard for a free train ride around the entire park (weather permitting, of course). These rides are incredibly popular - drawing up to 20,000 riders each year! While rides are free, the volunteer-run operation appreciates donations if you're feeling generous.

More Than Trains

While the railroad might be the star attraction, Hunter Hobby Park offers plenty of other ways to spend your day. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the softball fields and baseball diamond complete with a home run fence. Looking for some basketball action? The full-length courts are excellent for picking up a game.

The soccer fields come alive especially on weekends, with regular games that bring the community together throughout the week.

When it's time for a break, head to one of the picnic areas scattered within the park. You can find multiple tables and benches, some thoughtfully covered for shade. Planning a cookout? The barbecue grills have got you covered for family gatherings or friendly get-togethers.

Kid-Friendly Fun

The little ones aren't forgotten at Hunter Hobby Park. Multiple playground areas cater to different age groups - two sections designed specifically for younger children and one for the older kids. All play areas sit on wood chip surfaces for added safety.

The playgrounds feature all the classics: swings, slides, and climbing equipment. We love how the train-themed playground equipment ties in with the park's famous miniature railroad - a thoughtful touch that creates a cohesive experience for imaginative young minds.

Park Features

Around the park, you'll discover generous green spaces great for throwing a frisbee, walking the dog, or just lounging with a good book. The grounds are well-kept with neatly trimmed grass and plenty of mature trees offering welcome shade on hot California days.

Restroom facilities are available and regularly maintained, however like many public parks, cleanliness can vary depending on when you visit. Accessible pathways circle the perimeter, making for a nice jogging track or leisurely stroll.

You won't have to worry about finding a spot for your car thanks to ample parking. The park is generally well-lit, but note that some lights turn off relatively early in the evening.

A Green Retreat

What makes Hunter Hobby Park so special is how it stands as a verdant oasis amid Riverside's industrial and commercial landscape. It offers a breath of fresh air and a chance to reconnect with nature without leaving the city.

The park is busiest on weekends with birthday parties and family gatherings. Whether you're coming for the miniature railroad experience, an afternoon of sports, or just a peaceful moment under the trees, Hunter Hobby Park provides a glimpse of local history and community connection.
