Capitol Park

Historic Significance

Capitol Park has been a green sanctuary in Sacramento since 1860. This 40-acre park wraps around the California State Capitol building, stretching across 12 city blocks between L and N Streets to the north and south, and 10th and 15th Streets to the west and east.

Botanical Diversity

Walk through Capitol Park and you'll feel like you've entered a living tree museum. The grounds are home to an impressive array of labeled trees, shrubs, and flowers from across the globe. It's a bit like an arboretum where you can actually read about what you're looking at - well-suited for plant nerds and casual strollers alike.

World Peace Rose Garden

Perhaps the most enchanting spot in the park is the World Peace Rose Garden. This Victorian-style garden is a sensory delight with over 650 roses representing more than 153 varieties. Many are labeled to help you find the most fragrant ones - because let's be honest, not all roses are created equal when it comes to scent!

Monuments and Memorials

As you explore, you'll encounter numerous monuments that tell pieces of California's story. The Civil War Memorial Grove offers a tangible connection to history - these trees were planted in 1897 using saplings from actual battlefields.

The California Vietnam Veterans Memorial provides a quiet space for reflection and remembrance of those who served. Equally moving is the California Firefighters Memorial, honoring the brave men and women who have lost their lives protecting others.

Dog lovers, you can bring your four-legged friends along (just keep them leashed). And yes, there are restrooms - look for them between 13th and 14th streets on L Street.
