About the Location
History and Dedication
Found in Sacramento, California, Swanston Park spans 10 acres of public recreational space. The park was officially dedicated on June 23, 1979, honoring the memory of Charles Swanston, who made his mark in Sacramento's cattle raising and ranching industry way back in 1870.
Amenities and Recreation
The park offers a variety of recreational options. Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of the well-maintained tennis courts, basketball courts, and volleyball courts. If you're looking to get your steps in, there's a lovely walking/jogging trail circling the park's perimeter for about half a mile - ideal for a quick workout or a leisurely afternoon stroll.
The path features outdoor exercise stations placed along the walking path. These stations let you mix in some strength training while enjoying your walk - no gym membership required!
Playground and Splash Park
The Swanston Splash Park operates during the summer months from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day. The best part? It's completely free! Kids can cool off and have a blast with multiple water features and a splash pad that provides hours of giggles and fun when the Sacramento heat kicks in.
Right next to the splash pad, you'll find a modern playground with structures that keep children of all ages entertained. The surrounding grassy areas make it easy for families to spread out a blanket and make a day of it.
Picnic Areas and Facilities
Packing a lunch? Swanston Park offers plenty of picnic areas with tables scattered throughout, whether you prefer soaking up the sun or relaxing in the shade. Many spots come equipped with BBQ grills - fantastic for cooking up some burgers while the kids play nearby.
For bigger gatherings, covered picnic shelters can be reserved ahead of time. These shelters are particularly handy during those scorching summer days, giving parents a shaded spot to watch their little ones splash around.
You'll also find clean restroom facilities around the park that are regularly maintained - a simple but essential amenity that makes longer visits much more comfortable.
Community Center
At the heart of Swanston Park stands the Swanston Community Center, a versatile facility for various events. The center hosts everything from weddings and large parties to business meetings and social gatherings.
Overlooking the green expanse of the park, the center features an activity room that can hold up to 120 people for dining events or 200 for assembly-style gatherings. During the year, the center offers various classes and programs that help foster a sense of community among local residents.
Pet-Friendly Environment
Dog owners, rejoice! Swanston Park welcomes your four-legged friends. While there isn't a designated dog park, leashed dogs are welcome throughout the grounds. You'll often see locals walking their pups along the paths or resting with them under the shade of a tree.
Management
The Mission Oaks Recreation & Park District maintains the grounds and oversees the programs and amenities. The park opens daily from 7AM to 8:30PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy everything it has to offer, whether you're an early bird or prefer evening visits.
