About the Location
Lush Urban Retreat
Tucked along El Camino Real in Santa Clara, California, Civic Center Park is a three-acre green space that sits right in front of the City Administration Offices (City Hall). Despite its modest size, this little urban park functions as a community gathering spot - a place for residents to relax away from the city bustle.
The park may be small, but its well-maintained landscapes and colorful flower beds create a pleasant environment. It's a nice spot to take a break, enjoy a leisurely stroll, or simply sit and watch the world go by.
Water Features
The heart of the park is undoubtedly its large reflecting pool - a mirror-like surface that brings a slice of serenity to city life. Complementing this centerpiece are several fountains that, when running, fill the air with that unmistakably soothing sound of trickling water.
Do note that during California's drier spells or water conservation periods, these aquatic features might be temporarily turned off. When evening falls and the fountains are operational, they're illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere that transforms the park after dark.
Historical Significance
Standing proudly within the park is the Statue of Saint Clare, a nod to the city's namesake. This isn't just any statue - it's a bronze masterpiece crafted by artist Anne Van Kleeck using the ancient "lost wax process" and was installed back in 1965.
Perched atop a seven-foot pedestal, Saint Clare watches over the city, surrounded by concrete planters brimming with flowers and fountains. Even when other water features are resting, evening lighting bathes the statue in a warm glow, making it a compelling focal point regardless of the time of day.
Seasonal Beauty
If you're a fan of fall colors, make sure to visit in early December when the park's ginkgo trees transform into golden sentinels. These trees put on quite a show, turning the park into a canvas of yellows that's simply worth experiencing.
Recreational Use
While not sprawling, the park offers just enough open, grassy areas for families with kids to enjoy some casual play. It's the kind of place where you can spread out a blanket, open a book, or simply enjoy a moment of peace amid the urban hustle. The clean environment and tranquil setting make it an ideal spot for gentle recreation and unwinding.
