About the Location
History and Namesake
Mary Gomez Park was named after a true local hero - Mary Sanchez Gomez, a Santa Clara native and passionate educator who left her mark on the city. The park was officially dedicated on March 29, 1958, honoring her instrumental role in establishing the city's Parks and Recreation Department.
During her time on Santa Clara's first Parks and Recreation Commission (1950-1957), Mary helped create a policy ensuring that every neighborhood in the city would have its own park. Today, this green space fulfills her vision, continuing to bring people together in the neighborhood.
Park Features
Spread across 5.64 acres, this park offers various activities, whether you're looking to play, relax, or just enjoy some fresh air.
The open grassy areas provide plenty of space for impromptu games or just lounging with a good book. Tree-lined paved walkways wind through the park, well-suited for a leisurely stroll or a quick walk to clear your head.
Planning a get-together? You'll find picnic facilities with barbecue grills in two separate areas, suitable for family reunions, birthday celebrations, or casual meals. And yes, there are clean restrooms available too - always a plus for any park visit!
Recreational Facilities
If you're feeling active, head over to the basketball courts or tennis courts. The tennis courts are well-maintained, however there might be the occasional leaf that's made its way from the surrounding trees.
The park is pet-friendly, with paths and open spaces where your four-legged friends can get their exercise while you get yours.
Playground
The playground is a hit with the younger crowd, offering a range of equipment for kids of different ages. Little ones and bigger kids alike can enjoy the slides and age-appropriate swings. More adventurous children gravitate toward the monkey bars and the exciting zipline feature (though it might be a bit high for the smallest visitors).
The play area is kept in good condition, providing a safe space where kids can burn off energy and make new friends.
Aquatic Facility
When summer rolls around, the swimming pool becomes the park's main attraction. Measuring 75 feet by 42 feet with depths ranging from 3 feet at the shallow end to 9 feet at the deep end, there's room for swimmers of all abilities.
The pool offers both casual recreational swimming and structured swimming lessons taught by knowledgeable instructors. You'll appreciate the clean, well-maintained facility and the watchful eyes of the lifeguards on duty.
The water is kept at a comfortable temperature - not too cold, not too hot - making it especially nice for children. And after your swim, you can rinse off in the on-site showers before heading home.
Community Value
What makes Mary Gomez Park special is its laid-back, family-friendly vibe. It rarely feels overcrowded, offering a peaceful escape right in the neighborhood.
For many locals, this park holds decades of memories, from childhood adventures to quiet afternoons with their own children and grandchildren.
