Galvan Community Park is a 23.37-acre public space located in Santa Rosa, California. Situated along Yulupa Avenue, the park is surrounded by wineries, vineyards, and local businesses, offering a green oasis within the urban environment. With its diverse range of facilities, the park provides something for everyone, from sports enthusiasts to families seeking picnic areas.

Historical Background

The park's history dates back to 1975 when the City of Santa Rosa purchased the land from the school district. Development of the park began in 1979 with funding from a state grant and the Capital Improvement Program.

It is named after Dan Galvin Jr., who was actively involved in local sports, served on the Recreation and Parks Commission, and founded a business group that raised money for youth activities.

Galvan Community Park features a diverse range of recreational facilities catering to various interests and age groups. The park is home to the Bennett Valley Golf Course and the Iron & Vine Restaurant, Bar & Events venue, providing both golfing and dining options for visitors.

The park boasts well-maintained tennis courts and pickleball courts, though the latter are noted to be somewhat close together. Sports enthusiasts can also enjoy the soccer fields and baseball fields that host regular games and tournaments.

Playground and Picnic Areas

One unique feature of the park is its fly-casting pond, located adjacent to the dog park. Built by the Russian River Fly Fishers club in the 1980s and donated to the City, the pond is open for community use during park hours and represents a rare opportunity for anglers to practice their skills.

The club members frequently host free casting clinics that are open to everyone. The park also features a spacious dog park located in the back section, providing a dedicated area for pets to exercise off-leash.

Natural Environment

The park offers nice views of the surrounding hills and features mature leafy trees that provide welcome shade. Visitors may spot local wildlife, including deer and various bird species that make their home in and around the park.

The park offers ample parking with an entrance on Yulupa Avenue, though it can become limited during weekends and tournaments. Clean restroom facilities are available throughout the site, with both permanent structures and portable options.
