About the Location
Natural Escape
Located in the Lang Ranch neighborhood of Thousand Oaks, Sapwi Trails Community Park spans a generous 145 acres of mostly undisturbed landscape. Since opening in September 2018, this park has struck a beautiful balance - preserving the natural environment and Lang Creek watershed while still offering plenty of ways to play and explore.
Walking through Sapwi feels different from your typical manicured park. The designers intentionally kept over 400 oak trees intact and even restored parts of Lang Creek to its natural state. The result? A refreshing blend of oak woodland and chaparral that showcases what Southern California looked like before development.
Hit the Trails
With approximately 6 miles of multi-use trails winding through varying terrain, Sapwi is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Regardless of whether you're hiking, biking, horseback riding, or training for your next cross-country meet, these paths offer a genuine connection with nature while linking the park's various activity areas.
The trail system makes for an excellent easy-to-moderate workout route with scenic rewards along the way. Note that some hiking paths cross through the disc golf course, so keep an eye out for flying discs when walking through these sections.
Play Zones
Sapwi features several specialized recreation areas. The bike park includes a flowing pump track and trails for different skill levels that mountain biking enthusiasts can enjoy.
Disc golf players will appreciate the well-designed 18-hole course that offers just enough challenge to keep things interesting. The course's integration into the natural landscape makes for a particularly enjoyable round, even for beginners.
In a unique twist, the park also includes a dedicated space for non-motorized glider flying - something you won't find at most community parks.
Wildlife Awareness
As with any natural space in Southern California, Sapwi is home to local wildlife, including rattlesnakes. The warning signs posted throughout aren't just for show - snake encounters do happen here. Stick to the marked trails and stay alert, especially during warmer weather when snakes are more active.
Green Design
Sapwi Trails represents a forward-thinking approach to park development. By skipping traditional water-hungry lawns, the park uses 90 percent less water than conventional green spaces of similar size.
Instead of manicured turf, you can find native and drought-resistant plants that complement the surrounding environment. It's a thoughtful approach that makes perfect sense for Southern California's climate.
Learning Landscape
Throughout the park, you'll discover interpretive displays that share insights about the local ecosystem and Chumash cultural heritage - a nod to the indigenous people who originally inhabited this land. There's even an outdoor classroom area where formal environmental education programs can take place.
Sapwi Trails was developed through collaboration between various agencies and community groups, balancing recreation with conservation.
