Foster Park
About Foster Park
Natural Beauty
Tucked away in Ventura, California, Foster Park spreads across 205 acres of stunning landscape. The park sits against a backdrop of beautiful green hills, with the Ventura River winding its way through the grounds like nature's own ribbon.
The river adds to the scenery while supporting the lush vegetation and many mature shade trees that dot the landscape. On hot summer days, you'll discover people cooling off in the clean, refreshing river water. The combination of flowing water, diverse plants, and rolling hillsides creates a peaceful atmosphere.
Exploring the Park
Foster Park isn't just one experience - it's divided into distinct areas that each offer something different. There's the Day Use area for casual visitors, plus two campgrounds: Residence Campground and Red Mountain Campground.
The Day Use Area sits on the eastern side of the Ventura River and makes a great spot for picnicking, firing up a BBQ, or just relaxing under the trees. Running through the park is the Ojai Valley Trail, a multi-use path that welcomes horseback riders, cyclists, and walkers alike. This trail connects Foster Park to the wider area and stretches about 20 miles from the Ventura Slough all the way to Ojai.
A Touch of History
The park has roots going back to 1907, when Eugene P. and Orphia Foster gifted it to Ventura County in memory of their son. Since then, it's grown into a popular destination for locals and visitors searching for a touch of nature.
Things to Do
The diverse landscape at Foster Park opens up all kinds of possibilities. You can have a quiet picnic under the shade of towering trees, hit the trails for a hike or bike ride, or keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife. If you're feeling playful, there are horseshoe pits and swings, and of course, the river is always there for a refreshing dip.
If you're camping, each site comes with water hookups, picnic tables, and BBQ pits. And for the cycling enthusiasts, the adjacent bike path offers miles of scenic riding.
Amenities
You'll come across clean restrooms around the park with running water, soap, and toilet paper. The campground has full hookups for RVs at certain sites, however it's worth noting there aren't any shower facilities available.
The picnic areas are generous and well-kept, making them great for family gatherings or group events. And if you're camping, you'll appreciate the conveniently placed water spigots throughout the grounds.
Good to Know Before You Go
Weekends tend to draw crowds, so if you're after a more tranquil experience, try visiting on a weekday. Since the park borders a road, some campsites (especially site #9) might catch some traffic noise - opt for spots further from the road if you're a light sleeper.
If you're planning to camp, be aware that some sites aren't exactly level and might have steep grades. And don't forget to pack bug spray for overnight stays, particularly during warmer months - those mosquitoes mean business!
