About the Location
A Spacious Community Retreat
Situated in Aurora, Colorado, Expo Park spreads across 57 acres of green, open space - a breath of fresh air for locals and visitors looking to escape the urban hustle. There's something genuinely calming about having all this room to wander and recharge.
The park has been around since the early 1970s, born alongside the Queensborough subdivision. It was actually designed to be Aurora's version of Denver's Washington Park - a grand green space where the growing community could gather and play.
Recreation Opportunities
If you're into disc golf, you're in luck. The park features an 18-hole disc golf course that meanders through the natural landscape. It's pretty beginner-friendly, with holes ranging from 160 to 398 feet - perfect if you're looking to score some birdies without getting too frustrated.
Sports enthusiasts won't be disappointed either. The tennis courts light up at night for evening matches, the basketball courts sometimes have community balls you can borrow (a nice touch!), and there are baseball fields for when you're feeling that team spirit.
Natural Features
One of our favorite aspects of Expo Park has to be the two small lakes that add a touch of tranquility to the landscape. These water spots attract the usual suspects - ducks and geese paddling around - and word has it there's even a beaver that calls this place home. These lakes also create some interesting challenges on the disc golf course, so watch your throw!
As you wander through the park, you'll notice some public art installations that add character to your stroll. They're worth pausing for as you explore.
Trail Connections
For those days when you just need to walk and think, Expo Park's concrete paths connect to both the High Line Canal Trail and Westerly Creek Trail. This means you can extend your journey well beyond the park boundaries, whether you're walking, jogging, or cycling.
You'll notice plenty of people walking their dogs here - it's a favorite spot for pups and their humans. Just remember that dogs need to stay on leashes (up to 10 feet).
Family-Friendly Features
If you've got kids in tow, the playground facilities provide a welcome spot for them to burn off energy while you catch a moment on a nearby bench. There are also picnic areas scattered throughout - though fair warning, some tables show their age a bit. Still, they're meant for impromptu lunch gatherings or weekend cookouts.
It's worth noting that Expo Park sits within the Cherry Creek School District, which might be handy info for families in the area. There's a recreation center nearby, and when nature calls, portable restrooms are available throughout the park.
Accessibility
Getting to Expo Park is pretty straightforward, as it's situated near major Aurora intersections. Parking is mainly available on the south end, though it can fill up quickly when the weather's nice or during weekend afternoons.
Open daily from 5AM to 11PM, Expo Park offers a versatile green space that adapts to whatever outdoor activity you're craving. Whether you're looking for a peaceful morning walk or an afternoon of active play, this community park offers a nice piece of outdoor space right in Aurora.
