About the Location
Park Overview
Located in Aurora, Colorado, Great Plains Park spans 54.5 acres of recreational space. This park offers something for everyone - whether you want to exercise or simply unwind in nature.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 5 AM to 11 PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy all it has to offer.
Water Features
Let's talk about the sprayground - a total hit with the kiddos! This splash pad becomes the place to be during warmer months (late May through early September), running daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
There's a 15-minute break every hour, which is actually perfect timing for the little ones to catch their breath, grab some water, and reapply that essential sunscreen. With water depths of just 2-3 inches, it's safe for children of all ages, even the tiniest water enthusiasts.
Fair warning though - that water is refreshingly cold (and by refreshing, we mean brace yourself for that initial shock when you first step in!).
Play Areas
The park features two separate playgrounds that cater to different age groups - one for the under-5 crowd and another for the older kids (6 and up). Both areas are packed with fun equipment - slides, swings (including 5 baby swings), climbing structures, and monkey bars, all set on a wood chip surface.
What's really convenient is how the playgrounds sit close to the splash pad, making it easy to bounce between both during those necessary water breaks. Trust us, these play areas can keep children happily occupied for hours.
Sports Facilities
The park features a softball/baseball diamond, basketball court, and a seasonal volleyball net. The open sports fields round out the offerings, providing plenty of space for impromptu games or organized team activities.
Fitness and Trails
Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the network of paved walking and biking trails that connect to Aurora's larger trail system, including the Powerline Trail and Conservatory West Trail. These paths are excellent for your morning jog, an evening stroll, or simply taking in the natural surroundings.
You'll also find outdoor fitness equipment stations along the way for those looking to add some strength training to their cardio routine.
Picnic Areas
Scattered around the park are various picnic spots, from large pavilions to cozier setups, some complete with charcoal grills for the aspiring outdoor chef. If you're planning a bigger gathering, some shelters can be reserved through Aurora Parks & Recreation, while others work on a first-come, first-served basis.
With space for 60-80 people in the larger areas, the park makes an ideal backdrop for birthday celebrations, family reunions, or community get-togethers.
Restroom Facilities
You'll discover permanent restroom facilities that are generally kept in good condition, although sometimes they operate with a door code system. During busier seasons, portable toilets supplement the main facilities - not glamorous, but certainly practical!
Natural Environment
Great Plains Park incorporates natural landscaping elements that represent Colorado's plains ecosystem within an urban setting. The park offers lovely mountain views, and being near Buckley Space Force Base means you might catch the occasional F-16 taking off or landing - an unexpected but fascinating sight!
Thankfully, several shade trees dot the landscape, offering welcome relief during those hot summer afternoons.
Dog-Friendly Features
Your four-legged friends are welcome here! The park is dog-friendly with plenty of paved paths and grassy areas meant for walking your leashed companions.
Just remember to clean up after your pups so everyone can enjoy the clean, beautiful surroundings.
