Horace Shelby Park

A Glimpse of Local History

Named after Horace Shelby, this 4.7-acre local park honors an important figure in local history - Colorado Springs' first Black police officer and one of the founding members of the Colorado Springs Police Department back in 1887.

The park is a well-kept little oasis maintained by the Colorado Springs Parks Department, offering a peaceful retreat for nearby residents.

Play & Recreation Spaces

Kids will love the playground area that thoughtfully caters to multiple age groups. Little ones can enjoy slides and an adorable excavator-like digger perfectly sized for tiny hands and big imaginations.

For the more active crowd, there's a basketball court where you can shoot some hoops and a small skate area to practice your tricks and skills. Nothing beats the sound of skateboards and basketballs on a sunny afternoon!

Relax & Gather

Looking for a spot to enjoy lunch outdoors? The park features a pergola with a table and several picnic tables dotted around the grounds - excellent for everything from family lunches to casual meetups with friends.

The open grassy spaces provide plenty of room to toss a frisbee, let your dog burn off some energy, or simply spread out a blanket and enjoy the day. You can find comfortable seating areas throughout, ideal for reading a book or just watching the world go by.

There's convenient parking available if you're arriving by car, making it easy to access even if you don't live within walking distance.

Note that there are no restroom facilities at this park, so plan accordingly. The park welcomes visitors daily from 5 AM to 11 PM.

The park's cleanliness and family-friendly atmosphere make it a neighborhood favorite, and it's particularly scenic during the winter months when snow transforms it into a picturesque landscape.
