About the Location
Park Overview
Situated in Colorado Springs, Memorial Park sprawls across 196 acres of recreational bliss. This green space was created through a land donation from General William Jackson Palmer, the city's founder. Today, it's a place where locals and travelers come to play, unwind, and enjoy the outdoors.
One of the park's highlights? The panoramic views of the Front Range, with Pikes Peak standing impressively in the background. Open daily from 5AM to 10PM, there's plenty of time to enjoy everything this spacious park has to offer.

Prospect Lake
At the heart of Memorial Park lies Prospect Lake, a man-made waterscape that represents the park's centerpiece. A 1.25-mile paved trail hugs the shoreline, fantastic for your morning jog, leisurely stroll, or bike ride.
If you're looking to add some strength training to your cardio, you'll discover exercise stations dotted along the path, complete with instructions for proper use and targeted muscle groups.
The lake itself is a recreational playground where you can cast a fishing line, paddle board across the calm waters, or take out a kayak or boat. Swimming is allowed in designated areas, but keep in mind that water quality can change throughout the seasons.
Sports Facilities
For the athletically inclined, Memorial Park offers plenty of options. Baseball and softball fields? Check. Football and soccer pitches? Absolutely. Tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts? All here waiting for your next game.
Perhaps most impressive is the US Olympic Velodrome, a 333.3-meter outdoor cycling track that's one of just a handful in the entire country. Whether you're a serious cyclist or just curious about this unique facility, it's worth checking out.
Cricket fans haven't been forgotten either - two full-size cricket grounds stand ready for matches, adding an international flair to the sporting options.

Skate Park
Skateboarders, rejoice! Memorial Park houses Colorado's second-largest skate park, an impressive 40,000-square-foot concrete playground. With bowls, street courses, and vertical ramps of various heights, there's something for every skill level.
You'll often find younger skaters practicing their moves here, taking advantage of both the full-size and half-size halfpipes as they progress in their skills.

Playgrounds
Kids have multiple spots to climb, swing, and slide around the park. The Sunflower Playground on the southwest side deserves special mention for being fully ADA-accessible, ensuring all children can join in the fun regardless of ability.
For the older kids, the Broncos Playground on the southeast side of the lake offers more challenging structures. Both playgrounds feature a variety of swings, climbing equipment, and interactive elements to keep young imaginations engaged.
Picnic Areas and Amenities
When hunger strikes, you can find plenty of picnic tables and shelters scattered across the grounds, with some conveniently placed near playgrounds (parents, you're welcome). You can reserve these spaces for gatherings or just claim one on a first-come basis.
The Lakehouse has a lunch patio with mountain views and lakeside ambiance. While portable restrooms are available around the park, do note that permanent facilities might have limited hours.

Community Events and Memorials
Memorial Park truly comes alive during the Labor Day Lift Off, a breathtaking hot air balloon festival held annually since 1977. Picture dozens of colorful balloons rising over the lake at dawn and glowing against the night sky - it's a Colorado Springs tradition not to be missed.
Beyond recreation, the park offers spaces for reflection at several memorials honoring veterans, peace officers, and fallen firefighters. These thoughtfully maintained sites add depth and meaning to the park's character.
Wildlife and Natural Beauty
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the park's diverse bird population - from Canadian geese and mallards to pelicans and, if you're lucky, the occasional bald eagle. The combination of water, open spaces, and mountain backdrops creates a surprisingly peaceful natural retreat within city limits.
The rolling grassy hills make perfect launching pads for kite flying, while trees across the grounds offer shady respite on hot summer days. The park offers opportunities for both adventure and tranquility.
