About the Location

Historic Heart of Fort Collins

Tucked between Shields Street and Taft Hill Road along Mulberry Street lies Fort Collins City Park - the oldest community park in town. Since the early 1900s, this sprawling 85-acre green space has been a central gathering place for the community.

The Lake Life

At the center of it all sits Sheldon Lake (or City Park Lake, if you're feeling casual). The lake is meant for channeling your inner angler or taking a leisurely paddle boat ride when the weather's warm. A walking path hugs the shoreline, offering some seriously peaceful views and prime bird-watching opportunities.

Just a heads-up though - while the lake is gorgeous to look at, you might want to save your swimming for elsewhere due to water quality considerations.

Green Retreats

The park unfolds with expansive green spaces sheltered by towering mature trees that have witnessed decades of Fort Collins history. Tree enthusiasts will appreciate the arboretum with its self-guided tour - excellent for those moments when you suddenly need to know the difference between an elm and an oak.

The open grassy areas practically beg for impromptu frisbee games, picnic blankets, or just stretching out with a good book. Keep your eyes peeled for the park's feathered residents - geese and various waterfowl often stop by to say hello.

Get Moving

For the active visitors, City Park offers lighted tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball fields, and plenty of open space for various sports. The fitness course circling the park offers workout stations for those looking to mix up their exercise routine with some fresh air.

Kids can burn off energy at the playgrounds featuring climbing structures and swings, plus a historical cannon sculpture that sparks imagination. For a more relaxed pace, try your hand at the horseshoe pits or simply wander the winding pathways.

Unique Features

Look out for the park's quirky landmarks, including a replica of the Statue of Liberty and decorative frog sculptures that add character to the landscape. When summer temperatures rise, the City Park Pool and water park becomes the place to be - complete with a lazy river and water slides that make cooling off actually fun.

You'll find several reservable picnic shelters equipped with BBQ grills (some even have electrical outlets), well-suited for family reunions or birthday celebrations. Clean restrooms are available throughout, but they tend to be in better shape earlier in the day.

Community Connections

The park hosts numerous community events throughout the year. Summer Tuesday evening Food Truck Rallies transform the space into an outdoor dining room with live music setting the soundtrack for your meal.

History buffs shouldn't miss a ride on the historic Fort Collins Trolley, which boards at the park before heading downtown during its operating season. And if you're around for the Fourth of July celebration, you're in for a treat - just be prepared to share the experience with what feels like the entire city.

Four-Legged Friends Welcome

City Park is definitely dog-friendly territory, but your furry companions need to stay on leash. The spacious grounds and extensive walking paths give plenty of room for your pup to explore and make new friends. Remember to bring those doggie bags along - while the park welcomes dogs, there aren't any fenced areas specifically designated for off-leash play.
