About the Location

A Bit of History & Why It Matters

Tucked between West Prospect and West Drake Roads since 1983, Rolland Moore Park spreads across 68 leafy acres in Fort Collins. Easy to find off South Shields Street, this park has been bringing joy to locals for decades.

The park bears the name of Rolland Moore, who dedicated 37 years of his life as Parks Superintendent for Fort Collins. More than just a pretty space, this park made history as the site of Fort Collins' first handicap-accessible playground - reflecting the city's early effort to create spaces everyone can enjoy.

The Lay of the Land

Rolland Moore is designed with a blend of sports areas, relaxation spots, and natural elements. It's flanked by two City Natural Areas and partially bordered by an irrigation ditch that doubles as a wildlife corridor.

The Spring Creek Trail skirts the edge of the park, making it a breeze for cyclists and walkers to pop in. Throughout the grounds, you'll find groves of trees providing shade on hot Colorado days, alongside open grassy spaces for various activities.

A charming little pond adds to the scenery and offers a refreshing spot during summer months. If you're into wildlife watching, keep your eyes peeled for fox squirrels and Northern Flickers in the adjoining Ross Natural Area - they're regular residents.

Get Your Game On

The park features five full-court basketball courts, several baseball/softball fields (complete with lights for evening games), and a tennis area that's popular with locals.

There are also sand volleyball courts for both casual and competitive play. There are also horseshoe pits for those who appreciate this classic pastime, plus plenty of open space for frisbee, dog fetch, or just running around.

Families will appreciate the multiple playground areas designed for different age groups. The swings include options for babies and those with special needs - though it's worth noting some of the equipment could use a refresh.

The Comfort Factor

Planning a gathering? You'll find several picnic areas with covered shelters that even include electrical outlets - great for family reunions or birthday celebrations. Multiple grilling areas are scattered throughout, so you can cook up something tasty while enjoying the outdoors.

You won't have to worry about bathroom breaks with clean restroom facilities conveniently placed around the park, especially near the ball fields. The park's wheelchair-accessible paths and paved walking trails make it navigable for everyone.

Parking is plentiful throughout the grounds, with extra spaces near the playground area. Despite all these amenities, the park never feels crowded - the park's layout provides enough space to enjoy activities without overcrowding.

Bragging Rights

Rolland Moore Park isn't just locally loved - it's received some impressive recognition over the years. In 1984, it snagged the Facility of Merit for Outstanding Sports/Recreation Facility from "Athletic Business" magazine.

Even the shelter design got noticed, earning an Award of Merit from "Park Maintenance" magazine and The Park Maintenance Institute back in 1985. Not too shabby for a community park!
