About the Location
A Modern Community Space
Woodbriar Park is a 7-acre neighborhood community park located in Greeley, Colorado. The park underwent a significant renovation project in 2017-2019, which transformed it into a multi-functional space that combines recreational amenities with flood control features.
The park's redesign focused on water conservation, reduced maintenance requirements, and the creation of a natural area that reflects Colorado's native beauty while enhancing wildlife habitats.
Sustainable Design Elements
The renovation included the planting of 50 new trees to replace about 20 that were removed during the project. The old trees were repurposed as part of a nature playground, creating a unique and sustainable play area for children.
One of the key features of Woodbriar Park is its innovative flood control system. The park now includes a multi-use detention facility designed to manage and reduce peak water demand during heavy rainfall events. This feature not only serves a practical purpose but also adds to the park's aesthetic appeal with the creation of a natural creek amenity.
Recreational Opportunities
The park offers a variety of recreational opportunities for visitors. It features looped walking trails that wind through the park, providing a pleasant environment for strolls and exercise. For those interested in sports, the park includes a sand volleyball court.
An amphitheater and shelter facility have been added, creating a space for community gatherings and events.
Educational Features
Woodbriar Park also incorporates educational elements into its design. An environmental art plaza celebrates Greeley's history as a responsible water manager in the arid west.
This plaza includes interactive features such as a Parshall flume, slide gate, and diversion runnels that visitors can operate, offering a hands-on learning experience about water management.
The park's renovation has made it a model for sustainable urban park design, balancing community recreational needs with environmental considerations and flood control measures.
