If you're looking for a place to kick a ball around or catch some softball action, Schafer Athletic Complex offers several options. The complex features a sprawling layout of athletic fields that are open for public use when they're not hosting organized events.

You can find six softball fields and several multi-use fields throughout the grounds, all maintained with care. If you're competing in a league game or just tossing a frisbee with friends, the well-kept turf provides an ideal backdrop for your outdoor activities.

Indoor Amenities

Don't let Colorado's unpredictable weather ruin your game day. The complex houses the Foothills Sports Arena and Foothills Fieldhouse, giving you indoor options when the skies aren't cooperating. These spaces keep the sports action going all year round, regardless of what Mother Nature has in mind.

Visitor Conveniences

You'll come across plenty of parking when you arrive for games or practices. Need a quick bite or something to drink? Head over to the on-site concession area where refreshments are available during sporting events.

There are restroom facilities available, however be prepared for potential lines as there are only a few stalls serving the entire complex.

History

The park has a fascinating backstory that dates back to 1972. That's when the Federal Government dedicated 90 acres from the neighboring Federal Correctional Institution to the Foothills Park & Recreation District. The complex has grown over the years through additional land acquisitions.

In 1993, the facility was renamed after Daniel L. Schaefer, a former Foothills Board of Directors member who was instrumental in securing the land for the Athletic Complex.

Recent Improvements

Between 2020-2021, the complex received a makeover thanks to a voter-approved mill levy from 2017. The community investment has helped maintain the quality of this popular sports complex.
