Historical Background
J.S. Johnson Park is located in the Brooklyn section of Jacksonville, Florida. The park sits on land that was once part of a former corn and cotton plantation.
In 1868, the area was platted by Miles Price, a Confederate veteran who named nearby Stonewall and Jackson Streets after the famous Southern general Stonewall Jackson.
Park Development
The City of Jacksonville acquired the property that would become J.S. Johnson Park between 1967 and 1969. The park and its service center, which was built in 1970, are named after Reverend John S. Johnson (1884-1969).
Reverend Johnson served as a minister for several local African Methodist Episcopal (AME) churches in Jacksonville and was pastor of St. Stephens AME Church at the time of his death. He was also involved in the community, serving on the board of directors of Edwards Waters College and the Eartha M. M. White Nursing Home, as well as on the executive committee of the NAACP.
Community Services and Amenities
Over the years, the park's service center has provided free lunches for children and senior citizens in the community.
The park offers recreational facilities for local residents, including tennis courts and playground equipment. Its location in the Brooklyn neighborhood makes it an accessible green space for families living in that area of downtown Jacksonville.
