About the Location
A Dairy Farm Turned Community Haven
Situated in Jacksonville, Florida, William F. Sheffield Regional Park spreads across 385 acres of green space with a story to tell. This wasn't always a place for picnics and play - it was once a bustling dairy farm before the city purchased it in 2003. What's neat is how the park's design nods to its agricultural roots, especially in the playground area. In fact, locals have lovingly nicknamed it the "Cow Park" because of its farm-themed play equipment that kiddos can't seem to get enough of.
Water Views and Wildlife
Two large ponds anchor the landscape, offering spots for fishing and small boating adventures. These water features are little ecosystems teeming with local wildlife. While some longtime visitors mention that fish populations aren't what they used to be, the lakes still draw anglers hoping for a catch.
The boardwalk extends into one of the lakes. It's an excellent place to pause, breathe deep, and soak in the scenery. The back pond, with its surprisingly clear blue water, creates a serene backdrop for spotting turtles, ducks, and various birds going about their day.
Paths to Wander
The park's network of trails invites you to lace up your walking shoes and explore. Most paths are well-kept and gentle enough for all ages and fitness levels. The lake loop takes about half an hour to complete - just enough time to clear your head while enjoying some beautiful views.
Spread around the park are wide-open fields that beckon for impromptu frisbee games, kite flying, or simply lounging on a blanket with a good book. Dog owners particularly appreciate these spaces, where their furry friends can stretch their legs and burn off some energy.
Sports for Everyone
If you're the active type, you'll discover plenty to love here. The park houses multiple soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and softball facilities that host both organized leagues and casual pickup games.
There are well-maintained basketball courts and tennis courts for those who prefer these sports. As a newer addition (spring 2024), pickleball courts with lighting for evening play have been installed - a nod to the sport's growing popularity and the park's commitment to evolving with community interests.
Play and Adventure
Thrill-seekers can head to the skateboard park, where ramps and obstacles cater to different skill levels from beginners to more experienced skaters. The farm-themed playground area is always buzzing with children's laughter, but some equipment could use a little TLC and updating.
Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck from the small dock extending into one of the lakes. Just know that your chances of catching something might vary depending on when you visit.
Gathering Spaces
At the heart of the park's community focus are the community center and pool. These spaces host various programs throughout the year.
When hunger strikes, you can settle in at one of the covered pavilions or picnic tables, but be aware these are mainly clustered near the front of the park. As for restroom facilities, they're available but situated at the front and back of the park - which can feel like quite a trek if you're exploring the trails or hanging out by the lakes.
Before You Visit
The park has a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. That said, it can get pretty busy during sporting events, with parking spots becoming a hot commodity. You might also notice some litter, especially around the lakes, on busier days.
Four-legged friends are welcome here, and you'll likely see plenty of dogs enjoying the open spaces alongside their humans. Just remember to bring bags for cleanup and keep your pup under control.
