About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Back in the late 1950s, this peaceful spot began its journey as Camp Tomahawk, a private day camp run by Octavio Garces (affectionately known as Captain O.S. Garces to the kids) and his wife Geraldine. Octavio was an instructor at The Bolles School with a passion for the outdoors.
The city purchased the property in 1981, transforming it into the public park we enjoy today. As part of the deal, they named it after Octavio's father, Alejandro Garces - a lovely touch that honors the family's legacy.
Nature's Haven
Spread across 21.1 acres, this park feels like a little woodland retreat tucked away from city life. Much of the area remains wonderfully wild, with mature oaks, pines, and maples creating a natural canopy overhead.
A charming creek meanders through the middle of the property before joining the larger Goodbys Creek. You'll find this green sanctuary nestled between the San Jose and Beauclerc neighborhoods in southeast Jacksonville, just north of San Clerc Road.
Trails to Wander
The park's trail network has come a long way over the years, thanks to community efforts from the Mayor's Council on Fitness and Well-Being, the Jacksonville Track Club, and numerous dedicated Eagle Scouts.
These well-kept nature paths stretch about one mile in total, featuring three charming wooden bridges that cross the creek at various points. Taking a breather is easy with benches scattered along the routes - perfect spots to pause and soak in the tranquility.
The trails have become a favorite for dog walkers, families, and anyone looking to reconnect with nature without venturing far from the city. Even little ones can enjoy these accessible paths - they're gentle enough for small explorers.
Places to Play and Relax
Kids will make a beeline for the playground with its swings, slides, and climbing structures - it's especially great for younger children and toddlers. Parents will appreciate that much of the play area sits under tree cover, providing natural shade on those sunny Florida days.
For gatherings, a covered pavilion with about eight picnic tables provides a spot for family reunions or casual meet-ups. If you're planning to make a day of it, you'll come across grilling facilities nearby for your cookout needs.
The park also has a spacious open field - ideal for tossing a frisbee, kicking a ball around, or simply letting the kids burn off some energy. And yes, there are restrooms and water fountains with bottle refill stations to keep everyone comfortable and hydrated.
Paddle-Ready Waters
A notable feature is the kayak launch point that gives access to Goodbys Creek. Bring your paddle gear and you can explore the waterway at your leisure - some adventurous folks even kayak all the way to nearby Wicked Barley.
The creek doesn't just enhance the park's beauty; it opens up a whole different kind of outdoor experience beyond the typical land activities.
