About the Location

History and Namesake

Positioned in West Kendall, an unincorporated piece of Miami-Dade County, you'll discover McMillan Park. This neighborhood green space sits right beside McMillan Middle School, which first opened its doors back in 1976.

Both share their name with Howard D. McMillan (1919-1975), a dedicated educator who did something truly remarkable - he helped integrate Miami-Dade's school system during the challenging desegregation period of the late 1960s. McMillan's journey began in 1955 as a teacher at Shenandoah Elementary School, and through hard work and dedication, he climbed the ranks to become associate superintendent of the Dade County Public Board of Instruction by 1971.

Recreation and Facilities

McMillan Park is a clean, well-kept space where your family can stretch their legs and play. It's a popular spot for sports-minded locals.

The park buzzes with activity as home base for youth baseball, football, and soccer leagues. The lighted soccer field is particularly handy, letting games and practices continue well after sunset. Local baseball teams regularly practice and compete on the park's baseball field, adding to the community vibe that makes this place special.

Amenities

McMillan Park comes equipped with the essentials for a comfortable visit. Kids gravitate toward the covered playground where they can climb and slide protected from Miami's intense sunshine.

When nature calls or you need a place to regroup, the park offers a clubhouse and clean restrooms. Planning a family gathering? The picnic areas with shelters provide perfect spots to enjoy a meal together or simply take a breather between activities.

Visitor Experience

What strikes visitors about McMillan Park is its peaceful, family-friendly atmosphere. It's just the right setting for anyone - kids or adults - looking to get some exercise or simply enjoy being outdoors.

One particularly helpful feature is the evening lighting that keeps the park usable until about 9:30 PM. While the playground isn't enormous, the park as a whole offers plenty of space to spread out and enjoy whatever activity brings you there - whether that's organized sports or just tossing a frisbee around on a Sunday afternoon.
