About the Location
Park Overview
Nestled behind Claude Pepper Elementary School, Sugarwood Park stretches across 7.8 acres of well-kept grounds in Miami. The well-maintained lawns and clean environment create a welcoming space for local families and residents. It's one of those secluded places that makes neighborhood living so much nicer.
Recreational Spots
Taking an evening stroll here is particularly delightful thanks to the lighted walkway that winds through the park. If you're feeling a bit more competitive, the basketball court offers a wonderful spot to shoot some hoops or challenge friends to a pickup game.
For the little ones, there's a children's playground complete with a jungle gym and sand play area where kids can let their imaginations run wild. The playground is kept impressively clean - a detail parents will definitely appreciate.
The park's large grassy field is perhaps its most versatile feature. It's ideal for tossing a frisbee, spreading out a picnic blanket, or just relaxing on a patch of green.
Fitness Facilities
In February 2020, Sugarwood Park got a serious upgrade with the addition of a new fitness court. This wasn't just any renovation - it came about through teamwork between Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, County Commissioner Joe A. Martinez, the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade, and the AvMed Outdoors program.
The fitness area includes five pieces of low-impact gym equipment that are surprisingly easy to use, ideal for both cardio workouts and strength training. What's really thoughtful is the ADA-compliant ramp alongside the stairs, making the fitness court accessible to everyone, including those with mobility challenges.
Many locals use the park for exercise, meditation, and as a starting point for bike rides around the neighborhood.
Environmental Features
Sugarwood Park isn't just pretty - it's smart too. The gardens here actually collect rainwater from surrounding pavement and return it to the ground, working with nature rather than against it. The park's shade trees are absolute lifesavers during Miami's hot months, making this park notably more comfortable than many others in the area.
The landscape also includes drought-tolerant plants that thrive without excessive watering, contributing to the park's environmental sustainability while maintaining its lush appearance.
Visitor Information
Getting here is hassle-free with plenty of street parking available along the park entrance. If you're looking for a quiet place to unwind or spend quality time with family, you'll find a peaceful atmosphere here.
You should note that there are no public restrooms available at this park, so plan accordingly. The park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM to 7PM.
