Natural Environment
Tree Island Park is a 120-acre community park and natural wetland prairie/tree island preserve located in west-central unincorporated Miami-Dade County, Florida. The park opened in March 2021 and provides unique nature-centered outdoor recreation opportunities for residents.
The park features a mix of developed recreational areas and preserved natural habitats. It contains 20 acres of native tree islands (hydric hammocks) and 50 acres of muhly grass (marl prairie), which are characteristic habitats of Florida's East Everglades.
Native Flora
The surrounding natural preserve includes plantings of native butterfly-attracting plants and trees such as live oaks, gumbo limbos, and wild tamarinds.
Sustainability Features
Tree Island Park incorporates environmentally-friendly infrastructure aligned with Miami-Dade County's resiliency initiatives. This includes drought-tolerant native landscaping (xeriscaping), energy-efficient LED lighting, electric vehicle charging stations, and a LEED-certified restroom building designed to reduce energy consumption.
