About the Location
A Vibrant Community Space
Found in Miami's bustling landscape, Westwind Lakes Park sprawls across 20.3 acres of tranquil, picturesque grounds. This park offers a variety of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. What's interesting is that the park was built on reclaimed land - don't worry though, all the proper environmental systems are in place to keep things safe and sustainable.
Action Sports Park
A major feature is the Westwind Lakes Action Sports Park. This 10,000 square foot concrete area blends classic skate park elements with street plaza obstacles.
If you're into skating, you'll appreciate the two six-foot quarter pipes, various rails, a launch ramp, bank ramps, a wall ride, bench, stairs, and hubbas of different sizes. What makes this spot unique are its standout features like the giant volcano-shaped obstacle dominating the center and the quirky UFO bank ramp.
The park comes alive after dark with good lighting, and it's open year-round (weather permitting, of course). While skateboards dominate, you'll also see plenty of scooters, skates, and bikes rolling around. Just a heads-up - the place can get pretty packed during peak hours, so keep an eye on younger kids if you bring them along.
Family-Friendly Water Play
When Miami's heat kicks in, the park's splash pad becomes the place to be. Spanning 3,700 square feet with 20 fountains and spouts, it's a refreshing haven for children looking to cool off. The splash pad typically welcomes water enthusiasts during summer months from around 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
The water is clean and comfortably temperate - great for those sweltering Florida days. It's worth calling ahead before your visit though, as opening times can sometimes vary.
Playground and Children's Areas
Kids have plenty of room to burn energy at the covered playground, which features various play structures for different age groups. There's even a dedicated section for the little ones. The shade coverage is a thoughtful touch, allowing children to play without overexposure to the Miami sun.
Additional Recreation Options
If skating and splashing aren't your thing, there are other activities available. Take a stroll along walking trails shaded by beautiful canopy trees, enjoy open green spaces, or get competitive with various sports facilities. The park is ideal for soccer matches, baseball games, or a refreshing jog.
There's outdoor exercise equipment scattered throughout the park for those who want to exercise outdoors. The well-maintained sand volleyball court is always ready for an impromptu game or organized match.
Picnic and Event Areas
Gathering with friends and family? The park offers several picnic pavilions complete with tables and BBQ grills that you can reserve for your get-togethers. These sheltered spots provide comfortable spaces for everything from casual lunches to milestone celebrations.
Community Center
The park's recreation center offers afterschool programs, school break camps for kids, fitness classes including Zumba sessions, and activities tailored for older adults. The 55+ community center provides activities for seniors in the area.
Important Notes
Despite what you might read elsewhere online, only service dogs are permitted in the park. Clean restrooms are available, however they might not always be accessible depending on when you visit. If you're planning a walk, the trail loops about 0.6 miles, offering pleasant views of the canal as you go.
