About the Location
A Peaceful Natural Retreat Near Downtown
Just a mile from downtown Orlando is a little glimpse of natural tranquility that might surprise you. Established in 1991, this 19-acre location functions as both a natural preserve and a stormwater treatment facility. Located beside Greenwood Cemetery, these wetlands offer a quiet green escape from city life.
On hot Florida days (and let's be honest, there are plenty), the abundant shade here creates a welcome cooling effect that makes this park an ideal spot to catch your breath and reconnect with nature.
Wildlife Haven in the City
When you enter the wetlands, you'll likely spot various species of waterfowl and other birds that inhabit this diverse ecosystem. The central lake is the core of this ecosystem, with a walking path circling its perimeter where you can observe the wildlife.
Cypress trees stand tall along the waterways, providing welcome shade for your visit. If you're patient (and perhaps a little lucky), you might catch glimpses of playful otters or other native creatures going about their day in this protected habitat.
Take a Stroll
Need a quick nature fix? The 0.5-mile loop trail, known locally as the Lake Greenwood trail, offers a great opportunity to stretch your legs. The mostly flat path consists of compacted sand-shell material that's generally easy to navigate when the weather's good.
The paved walkway that encircles the lake features several benches along the way, fantastic for taking a moment to soak in the scenery or catch your breath. Good news for those with mobility considerations - the trail is wheelchair accessible and can be completed in about 15 minutes if you're not in any hurry.
Bring Your Four-Legged Friends
Got a dog? Bring them along! The park is entirely dog-friendly, provided your pup stays on a leash. There's even a small dog agility area with obstacles where your furry friend can burn off some energy.
You can find dog waste stations with bags across the park, making it easy to keep the grounds clean and enjoyable for everyone who visits.
What You'll Find Here
When it comes to amenities, Greenwood Urban Wetlands keeps things simple but thoughtful. Picnic areas near the water make for lovely spots to enjoy lunch or simply sit and take in the surroundings.
Book lovers will appreciate the little free library box where you can borrow or leave a book - well-suited for those who want to read in a natural setting. There's also a small parking lot with enough space for visitors.
You should note that the park doesn't have restrooms or water fountains, so plan accordingly before your visit.
Learning from Nature
Beyond recreation, these wetlands serve as a living classroom showing how natural systems can be woven into urban infrastructure. It's a practical example of how cities can manage stormwater runoff while creating beautiful spaces for people to enjoy.
Next to the park, you'll find a community garden that extends the green space and adds another interesting dimension to this urban natural area.
