Tucked away on Florida's southeast coast lies Savannas Preserve State Park, a sprawling 6,800-acre natural oasis stretching over 10 miles from Fort Pierce to Jensen Beach. Straddling St. Lucie and Martin counties, this secluded area protects the largest, most intact freshwater marsh ecosystem remaining in southeast Florida.

The preserve stands as a living museum of what Florida's east coast savannas once were before urban development transformed the coastline. Here, you'll find yourself wandering through five distinct biological communities: gently rolling pine flatwoods, expansive wet prairie, life-filled basin marsh, serene marsh lake, and the distinctive sand pine scrub habitats.

Wildlife and Plant Life

The diverse ecosystems here create perfect homes for an impressive variety of plants and animals, including some you won't easily find elsewhere. Keep your eyes peeled for the fragrant prickly apple cactus, the rare Savannas mint, delicate four-petal pawpaw, and if you're particularly lucky, a glimpse of the federally-endangered Florida scrub-jay.

The landscape changes with each season, with wildflowers appearing in abundance especially after rainy periods. Each visit might reveal new natural treasures as the landscape transforms year-round.

Recreation Opportunities

Over 15 miles of multi-use trails wind their way through the park's marsh system, offering scenic adventures for hikers, bicyclists, and horseback riders alike. As you explore, you'll find peaceful views that contrast with the nearby urban areas.

Just note that Mother Nature calls the shots here - trail conditions change with the seasons, and some sections may be underwater during rainy periods. The park also conducts controlled burns as part of its ecological management, which might temporarily affect where you can explore.

Many locals bring their four-legged friends to enjoy the trails (leashes required, of course). Whether you're looking for a quick nature fix or a longer outdoor adventure, the extensive trail network provides a tranquil setting for connecting with Florida's natural side.

Facilities and Activities

Your journey often begins at the Education Center off Walton Road, where interpretive exhibits offer insights into the park's natural treasures. It's a great first stop to orient yourself and learn what makes this preserve special.

Water enthusiasts can bring their canoes and kayaks to explore the wetlands from a different perspective, with convenient launch sites available. If you prefer to sit still in nature, try your luck fishing in designated areas.

When it's time for a break, a large pavilion with picnic tables provides a comfortable spot to refuel and relax. Clean restroom facilities are available when nature calls, with separate facilities for men and women.

The park operates on an honor system for the modest $3 per vehicle entrance fee - a small price to help maintain this natural sanctuary.

Beyond being a peaceful place to explore, Savannas Preserve fulfills critical ecological functions. It works as a natural filter, helping to improve water quality in the nearby Indian River Lagoon - an important function as development continues in the region.
