About the Location
Play & Sports
Spread across 19.5 acres, Sandhill Crane Park offers plenty of space for various activities. There are three well-maintained baseball/softball fields with lighting for evening games when the Florida heat has subsided. Got a competitive streak? Try your hand at one of the four lighted racquetball courts or spike your way to victory on the three sand volleyball courts. There's also a one-wall handball court - a first for the Treasure Coast region.
If you're visiting with little ones, they'll love the playground area designed for children between 2 and 12 years old. The space includes baby swings for the tiniest adventurers and a more challenging jungle gym for older children, however toddlers might find their options somewhat limited.
Chill & Unwind
Not everyone's here to break a sweat - sometimes you just need a peaceful spot to relax. The park offers excellent picnic spots, including an impressive 57-foot octagon-shaped pavilion equipped with tables, lights, electricity, water, and a grill. It's well-suited for family reunions or gatherings with friends. There's also a cozier 20-foot octagon family pavilion with a 4-foot table for more intimate get-togethers. Both areas come with BBQ grills, so you can cook up something delicious while enjoying the outdoors.
Fancy a quiet afternoon of fishing? The canal running alongside the park provides a serene spot to cast your line and maybe catch dinner.
Natural Beauty
Take a moment to explore the walking trails winding through the grounds - they offer a refreshing escape into nature without leaving the city. The park is named after the majestic sandhill crane, a protected species with impressive wingspans reaching up to six feet. If you're lucky, you might spot one during your visit.
Birdwatching enthusiasts, bring your binoculars! The canal near the entrance attracts a diverse array of birds including herons, egrets, glossy ibises, limpkins, and roseate spoonbills. One of the park's hidden treasures is the view of a nesting bald eagle in the adjacent Savannas Prairie Preserve - definitely worth seeking out.
Practical Stuff
The park covers all the basics with clean restrooms, Wi-Fi access throughout, an outdoor shower to rinse off after activities, ample parking, and doggy waste bag stations for your four-legged friends. While there's no dedicated dog park, your pups are welcome to join you on leash.
The grounds are well-kept and clean - a nice feature for any visit. Open from 8 AM to 10 PM daily, with sports lighting turned off at 9:30 PM, there's plenty of time to enjoy everything this versatile park has to offer.
