About the Location
Memorial Features
This park is a heartfelt tribute to submarine veterans, honoring the brave men and women who served beneath the waves. A historical plaque commemorates their service and sacrifice, preserving their memory.
One of the park's most striking features is a World War II era Mark 14 training torpedo on display - a tangible piece of naval history that often draws curious onlookers. Granite stones solemnly list the names of 65 U.S. Navy submarines lost since 1915, along with the dates of their disappearance.
History
The story of this six-acre space begins in 1979 when WWII veteran Carl Reddish purchased the land and made it his home, complete with a backyard plant nursery. If you look around, you'll notice three magnificent live oak trees - these weren't random plantings but were carefully placed by Reddish to honor his children and grandchildren.
Fast forward to 2015, when the Florida Department of Transportation acquired the property for the Crosstown Parkway project. In 2019, the Treasure Coast Submarine Veterans proposed transforming the area into a memorial park, creating a space to honor submarines lost throughout U.S. Navy history and the more than 4,000 submariners who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Recreational Amenities
Beyond its memorial significance, the park offers plenty for active visitors. A 1/3 mile paved walkway circles the lake, excellent for a quick jog or a leisurely stroll. While the path is illuminated, keep in mind that some sections might be a bit dim after sunset.
Looking to add some strength training to your routine? The park features outdoor fitness equipment that uses your body weight for resistance. It's free to use and works well for various fitness levels - if you're just starting out or looking to maintain your exercise regimen.
The overall atmosphere here is wonderfully peaceful, making it an ideal spot for unwinding or reflecting. If you're up for a longer walk, the park connects to routes that take you over the Crosstown Parkway.
Dog-Friendly Features
Dog lovers, this place is for you! The park has become something of a hot spot for dog walking, with several pet waste bag dispensers conveniently placed along the walking path. Just remember to keep your furry friend leashed and clean up after them.
Both you and your four-legged companion can stay hydrated thanks to a water fountain designed to serve both humans and pets - a thoughtful touch that makes this park particularly welcoming for dog owners.
