About the Location

Riverside Retreat

Next to the Hillsborough River just north of downtown Tampa, Water Works Park is a 5-acre green oasis that offers a wonderful blend of natural beauty and urban convenience. With stunning views of both the flowing river and the city's skyline, it's one of those spots where you can momentarily forget you're in the heart of a bustling city.

As part of Tampa's Riverwalk system, this park creates a seamless connection to the city's waterfront network, making it an easy stop whether you're a local looking for some fresh air or a visitor exploring Tampa's scenic river corridor.

From Forgotten to Flourishing

The park you see today isn't what stood here a decade ago. Reopened in August 2014 after a complete transformation, Water Works Park transformed what was once an underutilized space into a pleasant green area. The redesign thoughtfully honors Tampa's rich history with water systems, shipbuilding, and yes, even pirates.

You'll notice these historical nods throughout the park, especially in the play areas where a rope climbing frame topped with a crow's nest lets kids channel their inner sailor. Perhaps the most significant historical restoration is the Ulele Spring, now flowing freely into the Hillsborough River after years of being capped - a small but meaningful environmental victory for the city.

Cool Off in Style

The Florida heat can be relentless. That's why the park's splash pad might just be its most cherished feature on scorching summer days. Kids (and let's face it, some adults too) can run through fountains and water spouts for an instant cool-down that doesn't require a full beach day.

A notable feature is the giant water bucket that slowly fills before dumping water on anyone standing beneath it. You'll often hear the delighted squeals from children as the water crashes down during summer days.

Play and Unwind

Beyond water play, the park features a playground with climbing structures suitable for kids of different ages. The maritime-themed elements tie back to Tampa's waterfront identity while providing genuine fun for the younger crowd.

For those who prefer a more relaxed visit, the expansive lawn area invites you to spread out a blanket, enjoy a picnic, or simply lie back and watch the clouds drift by. It's equally meant for impromptu frisbee games or quiet afternoon reading sessions.

Four-Legged Friends Welcome

No need to leave your furry family members at home - Water Works Park includes a dedicated dog park where pups can socialize off-leash. Throughout the rest of the park, leashed dogs are welcome to join their humans on walks along the riverfront paths.

The walking trails that meander through the park and connect to the broader Riverwalk offer scenic routes for daily dog walks, with convenient waste stations helping keep the grounds clean for everyone.

Comfort and Accessibility

The designers of Water Works Park clearly understood that small conveniences make a big difference. Clean restrooms mean you can stay and play longer, while shaded picnic areas and covered shelters provide essential relief from the Florida sun.

Importantly, the park was built with everyone in mind - ADA-compliant pathways and facilities ensure that visitors with mobility challenges can navigate and enjoy the space with dignity and independence.

Community Heart

Beyond its daily function as a place to relax and play, Water Works Park represents a community gathering spot that pulses with Tampa's cultural energy. All year long, you might stumble upon local festivals, farmers markets, or community celebrations.

The park's amphitheater regularly hosts performances ranging from local musicians to community theater, adding cultural dimension to this multi-faceted space. Whether you're attending a planned event or simply enjoying a quiet moment by the river, Water Works Park offers something for most visitors.
