Tucked just minutes from downtown Athens, Virginia Callaway-Cofer Walker Park (formerly Trail Creek Park) spreads across 113 acres of green space that feels like a breath of fresh air from city life. Named after a dedicated community activist, this expansive park has become a beloved gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. If you're looking to break a sweat or simply unwind in nature, Walker Park has a little something for everyone.

The park is easy to reach from the Athens Perimeter or Trail Creek Street, but heads up - parking can fill up during popular times. Don't worry though, additional parking (including accessible spaces) is available nearby if the main lot is full.

Mountain Biking Paradise

If you're into mountain biking, you'll find over five miles of professionally built trails that cater to everyone from wobbly beginners to confident experts. Each trail has its own personality - cruise the beginner-friendly Green Loop, challenge yourself on the Orange Crush Loop, or test your skills on the aptly named Drive-By Truckers and Panic trails.

These well-maintained paths wind through an urban forest setting, offering a natural escape within the city. Many riders make the trip specifically for these trails, and it's not uncommon to see families enjoying rides together on weekends.

Walker Park has an ADA-accessible playground designed for children ages 1-12. The equipment is well-maintained and thoughtfully designed to include children of all abilities in the fun.

On hot Georgia days, the splash pad becomes the park's star attraction. Open throughout summer (except Mondays) until 5:00 PM, it costs just $1 per person (cash only). You'll come across nearby picnic tables where parents can relax while watching their little ones splash around and cool off - just remember to bring towels!

Outdoor Fitness Zone

Why work out indoors when you can exercise surrounded by nature? The park's Outdoor Fitness Zone brings the gym experience outside with chest press machines, lat pull-downs, rowing machines, and ellipticals. Located near the splash pad and covered picnic shelter, this free-to-use fitness area lets you work on your health goals while enjoying fresh air.

Some equipment shows signs of loving use, but overall, it's a fantastic alternative to a traditional gym membership.

Nature and Trails

Nature enthusiasts will appreciate Walker Park's connection to the Oconee Rivers Greenway Trail. Two trailheads within the park provide access to over 13 miles of scenic paths that showcase Athens' natural beauty. A peaceful creek meanders through portions of the park, adding a soothing soundtrack to your outdoor experience.

The trails are particularly popular with dog owners - you'll often spot happy pups trotting alongside their humans on these shaded paths. The abundant green space across the park also makes it ideal for spreading out a blanket for a casual picnic.

Facilities and Amenities

Planning a gathering? The park offers several covered picnic areas that you can reserve for events. These spaces have become go-to spots for birthday parties and family reunions. You'll find multiple picnic tables scattered within the grounds, including several round tables conveniently placed near the splash pad.

When nature calls, public restrooms with showers and changing areas are available next to the splash pad. While cleanliness can vary depending on the time of day, park staff do their best to maintain these facilities regularly.

The park welcomes four-legged friends, but you'll need to bring bags to clean up after your pet. With its mix of recreational facilities, natural spaces, and family-friendly amenities, Walker Park offers activities for visitors of all ages and interests.
