Chosewood Park
About Chosewood Park
Recreation and Facilities
Positioned in southeast Atlanta's Chosewood Park neighborhood, this 6-acre green space represents the community's backyard and meeting place. The park has a baseball/softball field where weekend games often draw cheerful crowds, basketball courts that see regular action, and newly converted pickleball courts (formerly tennis courts) that are popular with both younger and older visitors.
In recent years, the park has received significant upgrades, with new amenities and consistent upkeep making it increasingly popular with locals.
Playground and Family Amenities
The newly installed playground (added in recent years) offers clean, modern equipment that provides good challenges for children of various ages. Unlike some dated playgrounds around town, this one is well-maintained - great for parents looking to help their children burn off energy.
You'll also find clean restrooms with handicap accessibility - quite convenient when spending hours at the park with little ones who always seem to need a bathroom break at the most inconvenient times.
Expansion and Nature
Back in 2010, the park grew by about six acres to the southeast, incorporating deep woods with winding nature trails that feel surprisingly secluded for being in the city. These paths offer both longer routes for dedicated walkers and shorter loops that work perfectly for families with youngsters in tow. Just remember to pack some bug spray during warmer months - the mosquitoes didn't get the memo about respecting personal space.
The park's gently sloping terrain creates a natural platform on the northern side, rewarding you with unobstructed views of the downtown Atlanta skyline - an ideal backdrop for your social media photos or just a moment of urban appreciation.
Picnic Areas and Outdoor Dining
Scattered within the park are several picnic areas nestled under generous shade trees, creating perfect spots to spread out a blanket or claim a table for lunch. These areas work wonderfully for everything from intimate picnics to larger family gatherings.
There's also a designated grilling area if you're feeling ambitious enough to cook outdoors. Nothing beats the smell of something sizzling on the grill while kids play nearby and a gentle breeze rustles through the trees.
Edible Landscape Initiative
Perhaps the most unique aspect of Chosewood is its participation in the Edible Neighborhood initiative. In February 2013, two dozen fruit and nut trees were planted along the park's sidewalks, with hundreds of edible flowers following in the sidewalk strips.
Today, this experiment has blossomed into a thriving fruit orchard producing pears, berries, pawpaws, and other seasonal fruits. It's quite something to take a walk and realize that the trees around you are actually producing food - a little taste of rural abundance in the urban landscape.
Pet-Friendly Environment
Dog owners, rejoice! The park is definitely dog-friendly, with four-legged visitors being as common a sight as the two-legged variety. The trails and open areas provide plenty of space for pups to explore, but you'll want to bring your own waste bags to help keep the grounds pleasant for everyone.
Atlanta BeltLine Connection
Chosewood's location along the Atlanta BeltLine has given it a boost in both visibility and foot traffic. The ongoing BeltLine projects have been steadily transforming previously forgotten industrial areas nearby into vibrant green spaces, further enhancing this park's role as a neighborhood retreat.
