Walker Park
About Walker Park
A Glimpse into the Past & Present
Situated in the Southeast corner of Atlanta's Edgewood community lies Walker Park, an 8-acre green oasis with quite the backstory. This wasn't just any plot of land - it was once a Civil War battleground, giving your casual afternoon stroll a touch of historical significance.
Places to Play
The heart of Walker Park features a generous open green space where you can toss a frisbee, set up a picnic, or simply lounge with a good book. A paved pathway loops around this area, meant for getting those steps in or enjoying a leisurely jog.
One of the park's unique features is its outdoor inline hockey rink, transformed from what used to be a tennis court. If you're looking to join a game, the community regularly meets up on Wednesday evenings for some friendly competition.
The main field area sees plenty of action too, hosting everything from soccer matches to football games and even rugby scrimmages. Just a heads-up though - the field has a few uneven spots and bare patches that can turn into mud puddles after a good rain.
Kid-Friendly Fun
The playground is a hit with the younger crowd, equipped with several slides, climbing structures, a classic teeter-totter, and swings. It's covered with wood chips for softer landings, although on sunny days you might miss having some shade cover. While it's nicely sized for neighborhood use, parents should keep an eye out near the swings, which sit a bit close to the surrounding bushes.
Fitness Zone
For those looking to mix up their workout routine, the outdoor fitness area offers some solid basics: a horizontal ladder, pull-up bar, and leg raise station - essentially your gym essentials under the open sky.
For the Furry Friends
Dog parents will appreciate the well-kept dog park that's thoughtfully divided into two sections - one for the small pups under 30 pounds and another for the bigger dogs. With its grassy surface and border of shade-providing trees, it's a comfortable spot for four-legged friends to socialize.
Grow Your Green Thumb
The community garden adds a special touch to Walker Park, offering local residents a patch of earth to grow their own plants and vegetables - a little slice of rural life in the urban landscape.
The Practical Stuff
You can find the essentials covered with a porta-potty and water fountain near the playground. Marble benches scattered throughout provide spots to rest and people-watch. There's no dedicated parking lot, so you'll need to look for street parking in the neighborhood, which can be tricky during peak times. Biking to the park is a great alternative if you live nearby.
Hoop Dreams
Rounding out the recreational offerings are the basketball courts, giving visitors yet another option for staying active or joining in on a pickup game.
