New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam Park
About New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam Park
A Glimpse into History
Tucked along the Savannah River sits the New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam Park, surrounding a fascinating structure completed back in 1937 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The dam creates a steady, controlled 10-mile river pool that stretches upstream.
You can check out the historic lock and dam structure from safe viewing areas across the park. This structure provided a route around the falls on the Southern Piedmont "Fall Line," connecting Augusta with farmers and markets from Atlanta to Savannah. The canal wasn't just for show either - it once powered Augusta's bustling textile mills.
Get Outside and Play
The park offers opportunities for fishing, boating, or simply spreading out a blanket for a picnic on the open green spaces.
Got a boat? The well-maintained boat ramp provides easy access to the Savannah River with its gradual slope and plenty of parking nearby. The waterfront setting provides views and chances to spot wildlife - from turtles sunning themselves on logs to birds overhead and the occasional deer peeking through the trees.
For those who prefer keeping their feet on solid ground, several walking paths wind through the park, ideal for a leisurely stroll along the water. Note that swimming isn't allowed here due to the strong currents in the river - better safe than sorry!
Fishing Spot Secrets
The lock area attracts various fish species that run up the river seasonally. You can try your luck catching catfish, bream, bass, and hybrid bass depending on when you visit.
Just be prepared to cast from about 15 feet away from the locks. Convenient fish cleaning stations are available on-site, and you should know that game wardens regularly patrol the area to check licenses and ensure everyone's following the rules.
Comfort and Convenience
Planning a gathering? The park offers picnic shelters and pavilions you can rent for family reunions, birthday celebrations, or any group get-together. The pavilion area comes equipped with two large charcoal grills - well-suited for cooking up a feast.
Within the park, you'll discover numerous picnic tables, both covered and uncovered, giving you plenty of options for enjoying a meal in the great outdoors.
As for restrooms, the permanent restroom facilities are currently closed, but portable toilets are available when nature calls.
Natural Beauty All Around
What really makes this park special is its peaceful, well-shaded environment that lets you reconnect with nature. Spring brings a colorful explosion of flowers, while summer unveils an abundance of wildlife going about their daily routines.
Just remember to pack some insect repellent during warmer months - the mosquitoes can be particularly friendly here. And keep an eye out for poison ivy in some areas of the park, especially near the picnic spots. A little caution goes a long way in keeping your outdoor adventure pleasant!
