About the Location
Park History
Kakaʻako Waterfront Park is a 35-acre public park located in Honolulu, Hawaii, just off Ala Moana Boulevard at the end of Cooke Street. The park opened in November 1992 on the site of a former municipal landfill that operated until the 1960s.
Landscape Features
The park features a unique landscape of grass-covered rolling hills adjacent to the ocean, offering visitors panoramic views of the Pacific and the Honolulu skyline. While there is no sandy beach, access to the water is provided by concrete stairs.
The shoreline is characterized by a seawall and large boulders.
Recreation Opportunities
Kakaʻako Waterfront Park is a popular spot for various activities. It attracts experienced surfers, particularly to the breaks known as "Point Panic" (reserved exclusively for bodysurfers), "Flies," and "Incinerators."
The park is also frequented by picnickers, joggers, and those seeking a peaceful spot to watch the sunset.
Memorials and Facilities
Two memorials are located within the park: the Ehime Maru Memorial, commemorating the victims of a 2001 submarine accident, and a Victim Memorial sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
The park also features an amphitheater where concerts are occasionally held.
Nearby Attractions
The John A. Burns School of Medicine, part of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, is situated adjacent to the park.
In late 2019, management of Kakaʻako Waterfront Park was transferred from the Hawaii Community Development Corporation to the city of Honolulu.
