Sand Island State Recreation Area

Sand Island State Recreation Area is an urban coastal park located on Sand Island, a small island within the city of Honolulu, Hawaii. The park offers weekend shoreline camping in an industrialized area close to downtown Honolulu and the Honolulu International Airport flight path.

Spanning 14 acres, Sand Island State Recreation Area features a small sand beach fronting the Pacific Ocean. The park provides good views of Honolulu Harbor and ocean sunsets. Visitors can engage in activities such as picnicking, camping, walking, shore fishing, and board surfing.

The recreation area is situated in an arid, urban environment. Large grassy areas with scattered trees make up much of the park grounds. Adjacent to the recreation area is the Sand Island Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) day use riding area, which contains tracks and trails for motorized OHVs and non-motorized BMX bikes. This provides additional recreational opportunities for visitors interested in these activities.

While offering scenic coastal views and recreational amenities, the park's urban industrial setting and proximity to the airport do impact the natural environment.
